Xochimilco was once the garden of what today is Mexico City, until the voracious urban growth of one of the hemisphere’s largest capitals wound up absorbing it. Today, its labyrinth of canals constitutes a kind of rural island in the metropolis, and its survival is under constant threat. Among the wetlands and boats, dozens of people are resisting and searching for ways to preserve the area’s ancestral ways of life and its greatest symbol: the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). The key lies in the water.

Seguir leyendo

His father had recently passed away, and Gonzalo Samaranch, still young, left Barcelona to seek refuge in the only place even slightly deeper than his grief: the Brazilian Amazon. He spent eight months immersed in the jungle, spending his nights, alert and still, on platforms built in the treetops, waiting to hunt the animals he would eat in the morning. One day, he had a vision. “I saw myself in the future, in a jungle, growing food, married to an Indigenous woman, and in a place with an underground river. That’s exactly what I’m doing today,” says Samaranch, now 50 years old.

Seguir leyendo

In the 1960s, the ancient irrigation systems of Bali, Indonesia, were replaced by scientific ones. The proponents of the “green revolution,” based on cutting-edge Western technology, discarded the water management practices of the priests at a Hindu-Buddhist temple dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the lake. They opted for fertilizers and genetically modified seeds to increase production. They dismissed what they called the “rice cult” as magic and superstition.

Seguir leyendo

The first involves filling a bag with the air to be analyzed and taking it to one of the few laboratories that perform dynamic olfactometry, using human noses. In these centers, a group of panelists or “odor testers” are exposed to the contents of the bag. They start off with a minimal dilution, which is gradually increased. The moment when at least half of the noses perceive something is when the result is determined. This, subsequently, provides an estimated measurement of the amount of odor in the sample.

Seguir leyendo

Little by little, oil has coated them all. About two weeks have been enough for the sticky black residue to permeate everything in its path. Its advance has been met with an outcry. Since the first fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico reported the discovery of chapapote (petroleum residue) in their nets on March 2, the progression has been documented by the affected communities of the Mexican states of Veracruz and Tabasco. But their calls for help have fallen on deaf ears, judging by the reaction of the authorities so far. The few responses to the latest environmental disaster that has already stained 142 miles (230 km) of coastline have come in dribs and drabs.

Seguir leyendo

The town of Cholila, in the northwest of the province and just over 1,000 miles from Buenos Aires, is surrounded by fire: it is besieged to the south by the blaze that started in Los Alerces National Park and to the north by the one that began in Puerto Patriada. This situation has led to road closures and a state of high alert among residents, who have organized themselves into volunteer brigades to defend their homes.

Seguir leyendo

Up until very recently, Socotra had not received much international news coverage. Mention of the paradisaical Yemeni archipelago in the Indian Ocean, located near the Gulf of Aden, was typically limited to travel magazines and tourism guides. But at the end of December, some 600 visitors became stranded there, due to tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, allies that now have conflicting interests in the southern region of Yemen, which has been devastated over the last 10 years by civil war. Discussion of how the foreigners were to be evacuated drew attention to another issue in Socotra that had previously been eclipsed: how its unique and abundant biodiversity, which led it to be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, has suffered aggressions whose effects may be irreversible.

Seguir leyendo

A massive winter storm is set to sweep across the United States from coast to coast, starting on Friday. The system, described by meteorologists as potentially historic, will stretch over 2,000 miles and affect more than 30 states, from the Southwest to the East Coast. At its peak, more than half of the country’s population is expected to experience snow, sleet, or freezing rain at the same time.

Seguir leyendo

Aware of the decline of environmental issues on the political agenda, Neubauer has just launched a new phase of mobilization, with street protests and more impactful projects. In a few days, she will travel to Antarctica with a scientific team.

To cook chipa de pescado (a baked fish dish) with roasted yucca, the Asháninka Indigenous community of Peru must first gather bijao leaves to wrap the scaled fish in a leaf that will also serve as a plate. This community must also have fished for boquichico (black prochilodus) or chupadora (suckermouth catfish), in the Pichis River basin; quite a challenge since the widespread use of explosives and nets that barely allow the fish to grow. Similarly, to make toasted wheat soup, typical of the Quechua people in Bolivia, garlic, cumin, and red chili peppers, which they carefully harvest themselves, must be ground on a stone mortar. The story behind these ancestral recipes begins long before the fire is lit. It involves the selection of seeds, the methods of cultivation and fishing, how and with whom food is eaten, and how it is served. In a world where Western diets are increasingly limited to fewer food groups, keeping this diverse and colorful gastronomy alive is an act of resistance.

Seguir leyendo

In the case of the Colombian resort, recent scientific studies have recorded an average annual rise of seven millimeters over the past two decades. This is the second-highest sea level rise in the entire Caribbean, surpassed only by areas in southern Haiti. The underlying story is the same: greenhouse gas emissions have accelerated the melting of the polar ice caps.

The torrential rains that have battered South and Southeast Asia in recent weeks have once again highlighted the region’s vulnerability to the climate crisis. Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka have experienced a series of floods and landslides that have already left 1,300 people dead and 1,000 missing. A succession of three tropical cyclones, coinciding with the monsoon season, has brought rainfall levels unseen in decades, devastating basic infrastructure and forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes. Millions of those affected now face shortages of drinking water, power outages, and the uncertainty of whether they will ever be able to return to their homes.

Seguir leyendo
