Italian writer Antonio Scurati, 57, has spent the last 15 years studying, investigating and writing about the life of Benito Mussolini — a 3,000-page literary undertaking with global impact that began in 2018 with the first book, the award-winning M. Son of the Century, and culminated with the fifth, now being published in Spain. M.

In June 1926, Agatha Christie published The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, and something changed forever in the history of literature. It was her sixth novel, the third in the series about Hercule Poirot, a character both irritating and brilliant in equal measure, with whom she had launched her literary career six years earlier.

Tom Morello likes to use a word that many musicians stopped uttering long ago: resistance. The 62-year-old singer uses it naturally, the way he would when talking about songs, chords or the road. On June 27, he will perform at the BBK Legends festival in Bilbao, and in a video call interview, he sums up the spirit of the event: “It will be a celebration of the guitar and of resistance.”

Seguir leyendo

Years ago, you could sense the Galician influence on the Brooklyn waterfront. Dockworkers looked forward to the end of their shift so they could warm their bones with whisky, good company, and a caldo gallego. To get there, one had to turn one’s back on the bay and the Manhattan skyline, walk up Atlantic Avenue following the crews who had just disembarked, and let oneself be guided by a succession of neon signs in the red-light district that was then the Spanish corner of Brooklyn Heights. It was there that Spanish migrants served those who labored on the docks, plus sailors, the ones who had docked for a few days and the ones who were aground indefinitely. A dozen bars, many with Spanish names, flanked the street as though it were the entryway to an entirely different continent. The neighborhood lived and died within unmapped borders in the great city, permanently mired in a sensation halfway between rootlessness and homesickness. But the death blow came when the docks closed in the 1970s. The sailors left, the rents started going up, and the “gallegos” left seeking new ports, some returning to their native shores in northwestern Spain, others going further inland, others six feet under. Just two bars, the Long Island and the Montero — owned by two siblings who spent 50 years on opposite sides of the same street without speaking to each other — withstood the test of time and money thanks to their family motto of “buy, don’t rent.” The notion of securing a place where they could die in peace was deeply ingrained in the immigrant subconscious. The Long Island was sold years ago. The Montero will soon mark nine decades on its side of the port, but even Atlantic Avenue’s last Galician remnant has just changed hands.

Seguir leyendo

Until not too long ago, Jonny Greenwood (Oxford, United Kingdom, 54 years old) was largely known for being the guitarist of Radiohead. But the repertoire of the classically trained musician goes well beyond that role. He has composed pieces for the London Contemporary and BBC Concert Orchestras and, famously, the soundtrack for every Paul Thomas Anderson film since There Will Be Blood (2007). He has been nominated for three Oscars for best original soundtrack (most recently, this year for One Battle After Another). Plus, he has recorded three albums with The Smile, another group he shares with Radiohead vocalist Thom Yorke, and that is rounded out by drummer Tom Skinner. He’s collaborated on projects with artists from the Middle East, the Israeli singer-songwriter Dudu Tassa — controversially — as well as Shye Ben Tzur and The Rajasthan Express, a group of musicians spread throughout Israel and India, with whom he has made two albums. The first of these, Junun, was released in 2015 to critical success, and was accompanied by a documentary directed by Anderson himself. 11 years later, the same crew of musicians is back with Ranjha. The musician speaks with EL PAÍS on a video call from his home in Oxford.

Seguir leyendo

Javier Bardem is now part of Hollywood history. On Tuesday, the 57-year-old actor took part in one of those ceremonies so beloved by the U.S. celebrity world that cemented his status as the star that he is: he left his hand and footprints at the TCL Chinese Theatre on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is the first Spaniard to do so. The Oscar winner — with four nominations during his career, as well as seven Golden Globe nominations — signed his name (accompanied by a drawing of a sun), and pressed his hands, feet and even nose into the wet cement outside the famous L.A. theater, where more than 200 celebrities, from Marilyn Monroe to Kobe Bryant, have also left their marks over the past century.

Seguir leyendo

The passage of time has raised his stature even higher and enriched both his figure and his work: Borges has long been ranked among the greatest authors of world literature, and undisputedly occupies the throne of Argentina’s greatest writer.

Seguir leyendo

<media:text>In the new adaptation of Cape Fear, a notorious convict returns years later to settle the score with those who ruined his life; the series’ protagonist also returns with a mission that is less violent, but not so different. After several years of setbacks, failed projects, and uncomfortable conversations about her supposed “slump,” Amy Adams returns to the spotlight to prove why she was unanimously considered one of the best actresses of her generation and to turn the tide once again in favor of one of Hollywood’s favorite redheads. Pictured here at the series premiere (an Apple TV production) in Los Angeles on June 2.</media:text>

<media:text>Amy Adams was Hollywood’s safe bet. The actress who elevated any film, the perennial Oscar contender—with six nominations in 13 years—the performer who seemed incapable of making a wrong choice when it came to projects. Versatility was her most notable quality: she could do drama, musicals, comedy, or action, and in the same year, she could act opposite both Kermit the Frog in The Muppets and Joaquin Phoenix in The Master. Her name was a guarantee of quality. But like legends such as Glenn Close or Annette Bening, Adams joined the club of perennial favorites who never quite manage to win the statuette, and her star seemed to be fading. <media:text>Social media, always so quick to spin narratives, coined a term for Amy Adams—“the flop era”—which is used to describe the period when a celebrity experiences a string of disappointments or failed projects. Adams had fully entered this phase after releasing box office flops like Hillbilly Elegy, The Woman in the Window, Dear Evan Hansen, Disenchanted, and Nightbitch. There are entire articles, tweets, and podcasts dedicated to debating the actress’s supposed career slump and how long it would take her to get out of it. Much like a pop star whose albums no longer debut at the top of the charts, unmet expectations fueled a sense of lost momentum because her projects weren’t making as much noise as her previous ones. A story with a distinguished cinematic pedigree, a compelling character—a lawyer whose peaceful life is threatened by the return of a criminal she sent to prison—a major network behind it, Spielberg and Scorsese as executive producers, and an antagonist of the caliber of Javier Bardem. These are, in fact, what critics consider the best aspects of the series. “Brilliant, incredible,” notes ‘The Guardian’ about the actress, who appears in the photo alongside the Spanish actor and Patrick Wilson, her on-screen husband.</media:text>

Perhaps this lack of dazzlement by the lights of the movie capital has to do with the fact that she came into the spotlight late: her breakthrough role, in the indie comedy ‘Junebug,’ came when she was 31.</media:text>
