It’s a euphemism for white Anglo-Saxon Protestants and, increasingly, for evangelical nationalists as well. This language is being deployed systematically. In practice, the U.S. Supreme Court has legalized a machinery of control in which ethnicity — even how someone speaks, dresses, or what they do for a living — can be used as justification for federal officials, quasi-military forces like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to stop someone and ask for “your papers, please.”

Seguir leyendo

There are biases we’re not afraid to express: some prefer Real Madrid and others Barça. There were no celebrations or social gatherings when classes officially ended.

Boys and girls who reach primary school have similar math skills at the beginning of their schooling, yet it has been proven that over time, a gap develops in favor of boys, which influences their performance and participation in class, compared to those of their female peers. This phenomenon, known as the math gender gap, appears around age six and is attributed to cultural stereotypes and educational practices that can reinforce inequalities and provoke anxiety from a very early age.

Seguir leyendo

Around two weeks ago, as thousands of students celebrated commencement at Harvard under a spring sun, Alan Garber, the university president, received a standing ovation when he spoke seemingly innocuous words: “Welcome, Members of the Class of 2025 from down the street, across the country... and around the world.” The pause before “around the world” was deliberate. And I, a Spanish visiting scholar in the heart of Cambridge, Massachusetts, could well be part of the last generation of international scholars if the president manages to win his legal battle against the oldest university in the United States.

Seguir leyendo

Juli Ponce Solé, 57, is a professor of administrative law at the University of Barcelona.

Many developed countries have a regressive population pyramid, with low birth and death rates. For primarily economic reasons, young couples are reluctant to have children. We are an aging society, and if nothing is done about it, we will become even more so. Governments are working hard to establish material and economic incentives to promote natural population growth, but now neuroscience can also contribute to this with a powerful argument: the positive effects on the health of potential parents.

Seguir leyendo

Gabino Baltazar was studying education and natural medicine when he learned that, according to the Mayan calendar, his destiny lay in pedagogy and healing. Since that day, the rural professor from Huehuetenango, Guatemala, has concerned himself with the education of young people from his community. For the last three years, he has also attended to patients in his home. Although he would like to bring the knowledge of his ancestors, such as the medicinal plants with which he cured his mother, the benefits of knowing “each one’s destiny” and explanations of energetic implications to other audiences, he has been limited in that mission by the fact that his degree, for which he studied seven years, “doesn’t count” when it comes to hospital appointments. “In eight years, I’ll retire as an educator and I would love to be certified before that, so that I can set up my own clinic. There is a great need in the territories,” he says in a phone interview. “Cities are also losing all of our knowledge.”

Seguir leyendo

Two years after their launch, ChatGPT and other AI tools have become widely adopted, including by high school and college students.
