Estel Blay Carreras, 39, has dreamed of becoming an astronaut since childhood. More than half of girls who aspire to a career in science give up in adolescence, but that wasn’t the case for her. She turned a fantasy into a professional future. She studied aerospace science, earned a doctorate, and held several jobs. Today, Blay Carreras — who lives in a residential neighborhood of Spain’s Sitges with her family and two hamsters — greets us with a smile and wearing socks. She leads a seemingly conventional life, but in just over a year, she will be the next commander of a mission that will simulate an expedition to Mars on a remote Arctic island.

Seguir leyendo

Serra Grande, in the Brazilian state of Bahia, surrounded by tropical beaches and an Atlantic Forest now reduced to just 10% of its original size, is home to exceptional biodiversity. I left São Paulo eight years ago in search of a place with a better quality of life. I made a list of the 20 most pleasant places to live in Brazil. One of those places was Itacaré, right next to Serra Grande. What started as an extended vacation turned into a permanent destination. Gradually, I became involved in the region and its dynamics, documenting the small struggles and triumphs of its communities: from elderly women collecting shellfish to young surfers noticing the subtle and worrying changes in the ocean. The stories I’ve captured are part of a much larger, often overlooked narrative of survival and resilience.

Seguir leyendo

Golden‑light sunsets, pools surrounded by lush palm trees, entire neighborhoods of well‑kept villas, and curtains in the windows behind which the glimmers of domestic joy — but also the most secret family miseries — remain hidden… The whole world is nothing more than a giant canvas painted by an artist in a Hollywood studio.

“Dad, lend me your jeans,” said no child ever. And yet here we are, almost a decade after someone decided that such a request sounded plausible and turned it into a stylistic urban legend. It’s 2026, and dadcore —the style of the suburban paterfamilias, as endearing as it is bland, defined by the wardrobe clichés of old sitcoms — now strides down runways and permeates collections of every kind, confirming itself as the most resilient look since Gen Z took over fashion to shape its visual identity in a specific, clear, instantly recognizable way.

Seguir leyendo

Photographer Carol Guzy (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, 69) saw the agents take the man away as his wife shouted, “Please, help me!” and their two children cried. Guzy decided to accompany the family to the exit. There, the woman realized she didn’t have her keys; with no way to return home, she broke down in tears again. A court security officer approached her to offer help and, faced with the scene, also began to cry. Through her own tears, Guzy captured the moment with her camera.

Seguir leyendo

Timothy Morton is one of the authors leading the new wave of environmentalism. The British thinker, whose latest work is provocative and extremely personal, takes it as a point of fact that the destruction of the planet is in process. He is also one of the authors who has best described the anguish we feel every time we turn on our car engine or air conditioner, fully aware that doing so brings us closer to the end of our species.

Seguir leyendo

These ideas, applied self-servingly to human society, led to concepts such as social Darwinism. Developed by Darwin’s cousin Francis Galton, this gave rise to false ideas, such as the presumed superiority of certain races, or to terrible realities, such as the eugenics laws that were applied in many countries, not just in Nazi Germany. Richard Dawkins and his theory of the so-called “selfish gene” didn’t paint a better picture when he stated that what matters in evolution isn’t the survival of the individual or the species itself, but rather the persistence of its genetic material contained within DNA.

Seguir leyendo

A self-serving relationship

The honeyguide, like many bad people, is cruel to its peers, but flatters its superiors. This bird owes its scientific name (Indicator indicator) to an odd relationship it has developed with various communities across sub-Saharan Africa. Certain ethnic groups, such as the Hadza people, have developed a special call for these birds. The honeyguides, in turn, have a special call for humans: they use it to alert them when they’ve located wild honeycombs. Subsequently, the Hadza smoke the beehives and collect the honey. And, afterwards, the birds feast on the wax, the larvae, and the remains of the honeycomb. This is a full-blown symbiosis created by one of the cruelest brood parasites.

He’s a musician, about that there is no doubt. He has been ever since his father bought him a violin in Ballarat, the small Australian city in which Ellis was born 60 years ago. He is of the breed of musicians who are uninterested in taking that step forward into stardom. But rock fans have known of his work since the early 1990s, when he founded Dirty Three, an intense instrumental Melbourne rock trio of intermittent periods of activity. In 2024, they released Love Changes Everything, their first studio album in 12 years. It should be noted that in Australia’s second most-populous city, a unique sound has been created that has its roots in punk. It is loud, ramshackle, cacophonous, dark and fascinating, as allergic to convention as the Devil himself. Should a chorus appear, its proponents would run in the opposite direction. It is music made by misfits who seem to live in a constant existential crisis.

Seguir leyendo

She’s tired, having slept little for days (and still with little sleep ahead). But she is eager to talk about her fourth album, Lux, which at this moment half the world is already theorizing about without having heard a single note — it will be (was) released on November 7. The level of speculation is overwhelming, sometimes revealing more about the theorist than the object itself. Rosalía isn’t just big — she’s important. And all that this entails in an era of events and hyperbole.

Seguir leyendo
<img src="https://images.english.elpais.com/resizer/v2/6N3D4UIDXNFGVJR6I7TOB2ZVAY.jpg?auth=7235d93984519d897d5e68eb7c7134b44e73d0321a84625d420cfbd002e0fedf" width="2160" height="2160" alt="Rosalía wearing a white dress with a hood by Max Mara.

There isn’t a soul on the streets of Chelsea on a Sunday in summer. The residents of this New York neighborhood — once an industrial area in lower Manhattan, now transformed into a haven for bohemian bourgeois — have abandoned their luxurious lofts overlooking the High Line to retreat to their beach houses in the Hamptons. Maye Musk, 77, could be in Cape Cod, Palm Beach, or wherever she pleases. But the mother of Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, is about to enter the Wolf Building, an old printing house between 10th Avenue and the Hudson River, for a photoshoot with EL PAÍS.

Seguir leyendo

Photography:

Michael Schwartz

Styling:

Yael Quint

Make-up:

Cass Lee

Har:

Gianluca Mandelli (The Wall Group)

Nails:

Mamie Onishi (See Management)

Photographer's assistant

Pierre Bonnet

Digital assistant:

Dallas Raines

Styling assistants::

Lauren Delfino and Hannah Longstreet

Few places in the Big Apple are as legendary as the Russian Tea Room. How much of what’s said about it is true, and how much is just myth? Was Madonna really fired after two weeks working in the coat check? It doesn’t sound far-fetched. Did Leonard Bernstein write the opening bars of his famous Fancy Free on a napkin there? Probably. Did Zero Mostel himself serve food and drinks wearing an apron in an act of extravagance? That’s what people say. Did the ghost of Anastasia, daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, appear from time to time during renovations? That sounds more unlikely. But that there’s a huge rotating polar bear-shaped aquarium and a tree decorated with Fabergé eggs on the second floor, and a several-meter-high model of the Kremlin on the third, we can confirm as true.

Seguir leyendo
