For decades, treatment and prognosis of the disease has been largely determined by the organ, the anatomical location in which the cancerous mass is located. But now, science has placed a spotlight on something more ambitious: learning the tumor’s signature, or rather, the molecular alterations that characterize its malignant cells. The latest meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), which took place last weekend in Chicago, has given further impetus to precision oncology and highlighted how cancer biology, those microscopic genetic characteristics that define it, are playing an increasingly important role in determining therapeutic approach, and even predicting prognosis.

Seguir leyendo

Michel Rambaud, a chemist and French officer with the Allied occupation forces, devised the project based on the fact that the fermentation process by which yeasts make beer is, in essence, the same process that Penicillium fungi use to synthesize the active ingredient in penicillin. The change of use for the facilities opened a new era: the start of industrial penicillin production saved millions of lives and helped drive a rapid economic recovery across the continent, powered partly by the pharmaceutical sector.

Seguir leyendo

Two studies published this week are steps toward that possibility, and raise controversial questions as to whether early screening should be made available to the general population to look for the disease’s first molecular signs. That would allow for the identification of individuals who are at the highest risk. But it would also generate a large number of false positives that could overwhelm healthcare services.

Seguir leyendo

Global mental health has eroded. A study published this Thursday in the journal The Lancet estimates that about 1.2 billion people — 14% of the planet — suffer from mental health problems. That is, in absolute terms, nearly double the number recorded in 1990. Experts attribute the rise in part to improved detection, but also say entrenched poverty, wars, the impact of natural disasters and disruptive events such as the COVID-19 pandemic have driven up the incidence of some disorders. Adolescents aged 15 to 19 and women of all ages are the hardest hit: they bear the highest levels, especially of anxiety and depression. According to the study, mental disorders are already the leading cause of disability worldwide, surpassing cardiovascular disease, cancer and musculoskeletal conditions.

Seguir leyendo

He has never been a miner, but he lives surrounded by mines in the Sifontes municipality of Bolívar state, Venezuela — one of the epicenters of both mining activity and malaria transmission in the country. He has had malaria five times, most recently in 2015, 2016, and 2017.

One of the main drivers of aging is the accumulation of aged cells in tissues. For reasons not entirely understood, with age, the body accumulates senescent cells that do not die, and that benefit one of the suspected culprits behind the body’s deterioration over the years: inflammation. Now, a team led by Harvard University researcher David Lagares has found a possible way to reverse this process in the lungs, one of the organs whose cells deteriorate over time and can lead to diseases such as fibrosis, an incurable condition that primarily affects people over 65.

Seguir leyendo

For 40 years, the world has been under the grip of a “global obesity epidemic” — a surge in excess weight that raises the risk of developing cancer, cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological diseases.

The hantavirus from the MV Hondius outbreak has been sequenced from samples taken from one of the infected individuals. The results confirm that it is the Andes strain, the most virulent and contagious, but rule out any mutation. Sequencing the virus is now a priority for the scientific community. It holds within its structure a black box of crucial information: it can help identify how the virus spread, why so many people have become ill (to date, there are 10 suspected cases and three deaths from a virus considered very difficult to transmit), and how long it may have been circulating before its detection. As more sequencing data becomes available, a clearer picture of how this virus evolves will emerge. But for now, this work already offers a first glimpse.

Seguir leyendo

The next day, health authorities reported several confirmed and suspected cases aboard the Arctic cruise ship MV Hondius, which had departed from Argentina. The sequence — diplomatic failure one day and a health alert the next — underscores how the international community is still debating the rules for confronting the next pandemic while pathogens continue to spread without waiting for political consensus.

Seguir leyendo
