The protagonist of The Anniversary, the award-winning novel by Italian writer Andrea Bajani, decides to separate himself from his parents, cut off all communication with them, to escape the distress caused by the relationship, irrevocably marked by the totalitarianism and persistent violence — both physical and emotional — exerted by his father. Unwittingly, with this distancing aimed at protecting his emotional well-being, this adult man is also buying himself a ticket to a longer and better life.

Seguir leyendo

What if there were a “natural Ozempic”? A substance with all the proven benefits of GLP-1-based drugs, but without their contraindications. It would be a panacea — one that some brands and social media influencers are trying to attribute to a supplement called berberine. They’re capitalizing on the fact that this supplement has shown some metabolic benefits, but it’s not Ozempic, it doesn’t work like Ozempic, and it doesn’t serve the same purpose.

Seguir leyendo

Better known as the Berlin patient, this man marked an unprecedented milestone in 2009 by becoming the first person with HIV to be free of the virus after receiving a very particular stem cell transplant. Doctors, cautious at the time, spoke of remission. But, for all intents and purposes, he was cured. There was no trace of the virus in his body, and there never was again: Brown died in 2020, but from a relapse of the cancer he had suffered from. His emblematic case demonstrated that eradicating the AIDS virus was possible and paved the way for a therapeutic strategy that, although difficult to scale to the entire HIV-positive population, now includes 10 cases in remission: 10 people considered cured.

Seguir leyendo

In his essay Writing Is Ceasing to Be a Writer, Enrique Vila-Matas recounts that he chose his profession because he wanted to be free and didn’t want to go to an office every morning. When he made that decision, he didn’t know he would end up living “like a mole in a tunnel, working day and night.” In interviews and memoirs, many novelists admit that, aside from their calling, what they wanted most when they began writing was to escape the cold of the street by staying home on those weekday mornings when most employees are commuting and going about their daily routines. Shortly afterward, they realized that “calling someone a disciplined author is redundant,” as Juan José Millás often points out, because literature demands many hours of concentration each day.

Seguir leyendo

The first involves filling a bag with the air to be analyzed and taking it to one of the few laboratories that perform dynamic olfactometry, using human noses. In these centers, a group of panelists or “odor testers” are exposed to the contents of the bag. They start off with a minimal dilution, which is gradually increased. The moment when at least half of the noses perceive something is when the result is determined. This, subsequently, provides an estimated measurement of the amount of odor in the sample.

Seguir leyendo

Feeling hungry can alter our mood. Various studies have shown that hunger can make us more negative, irritable and aggressive. The emotional impact of hunger can even affect our decision-making. This was demonstrated by a 2011 Israeli study that gave rise to what is known as the “hungry judge effect.” What the study’s authors observed was that the severity of judges’ sentences increased as lunchtime approached, only to become significantly more lenient after the lunch break. This close relationship ultimately led to the invention of a term to refer to this phenomenon: “hangry” (a combination of “hungry” and “angry”). It was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in January of 2018.

Seguir leyendo

The emotional world of animals is vast and complex. “They are social beings, so they form bonds with their companions, both of the same species and others,” says the veterinarian Sandra Borrás. “When they undergo a change, such as the loss or arrival of a new member to their family, they go through a period of adjustment to the new situation,” she adds.

Seguir leyendo

When Matthew Lieberman began studying social pain in the 1990s, very few of his colleagues bought into the idea that isolation, solitude and a lack of social skills – in short, loneliness — could cause a level of pain comparable to physical ailments. However, after the COVID-19 pandemic — which was followed by an epidemic of loneliness – Lieberman’s theories have made him one of the world’s most influential researchers in his field, with more than 58,000 academic citations. His book Social: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Connect (2013), continues to be translated at a time when his arguments are more relevant than ever, and has just been published in Spanish.

Seguir leyendo

What exactly is aging? The question seems obvious, but perhaps it’s not, given that the organizers of a large scientific conference on the subject decided to pose the query to participating experts. After a week of dozens of presentations and talks during the Gordon Research Conference in Newry, Maine, 103 attendees responded to this and eight other questions that looked to gauge consensus within the industry. They received up to 10 different kinds of answers, of which the most popular was returned by just 30% of respondents. In reality, none of their study’s nine questions — which included what causes aging, when it starts and what constitutes rejuvenation — received an answer with more than 50% support from respondents. Consensus proved so elusive that respondents weren’t even in agreement on whether it was necessary in the first place.

Seguir leyendo

Four years ago, María, Adriana, and Paula López Fontanals received one of those life-changing pieces of news: it would change their bodies, their relationships with motherhood, with their daughters, with their health... A cousin alerted them after she developed a rapidly progressing breast tumor. “In September, she was cancer-free, and in January, she found a lump that had grown very quickly. Her mother had died of breast cancer. They told her, ‘Something’s wrong here,’ and they did a genetic test,” the sisters explain. That’s how she learned she carried a mutated version of the BRCA1 gene, known as the Angelina Jolie gene, whose name comes from BReast CANcer 1.

Seguir leyendo

Something is changing in breast cancer: it remains the most common tumor among women, but risk profiles are not the same. This group of diseases continues to be closely linked to aging, and in fact, most diagnoses occur in women over 55; however, in recent decades, cases in premenopausal women have been increasing more rapidly. A study published this Monday in The Lancet Oncology reveals that, while the rate of new diagnoses in older women has not changed substantially in the last three decades, in women between 20 and 54 years old it has increased by 29% since 1990.

Seguir leyendo

The therapy involves extracting immune cells from the patient, genetically modifying them, and then reintroducing them, now with an enhanced capacity to destroy cancer cells. However, this successful treatment has so far failed against solid tumors, which are the most common kind.
