There, in the current that runs through those vessels and supplies the heart, lies data about our degree of physical activity, our diet and, according to a recent article, the pollution we are exposed to. A study published Wednesday in the journal European Heart Journal detected more microplastics in the blood of heart attack patients than in people who are healthy or who have chronic ischemic heart disease. Phrases like these are heard often in conversations among friends, family or co-workers. It happens often in settings where the line between care, empathy and control is blurred. Some people feel a constant need to give advice, even when it hasn’t been asked for. They believe they’re doing something good, but often end up intruding in other people’s lives and sometimes damaging relationships. Those on the receiving end don’t always know how to stop the intrusion without seeming rude. Unsolicited advice can come across as invalidation or carry an implicit message: “You don’t know how to manage your own life; let me explain how to do it better.” That feeling can trigger guilt, resistance and even distance, especially when the advice comes from someone close.

Seguir leyendo

Obesity is written in our DNA and predicts, like a genetic prophecy, the body type we will have. A few decades ago it was easier to rebel against that fate — to fight our genetic programming and keep extra pounds at bay. But in an obesogenic world, surrounded by ubiquitous cheap and addictive food products, it is increasingly difficult. Early-1990s beauty meant sunken eyes, pronounced bones, a languid attitude, messy hair, a vacant stare and a general look of stunned bewilderment.

To be born, grow and die hardly able to move; battery hens that can’t open their wings, rabbits that never step on grass, and breeding sows immobilized for weeks on slats. That is the reality for 300 million animals in Europe. In 2021, Brussels promised to put an end to animal confinement with a law to progressively eliminate cages in livestock farming. Five years later, that promise is a dead letter.

Seguir leyendo

Labels to avoid misleading consumers

A ban on cages does not in itself guarantee a profound transformation of the livestock model. The National Association for the Defense of Animals (ANDA) fears that some companies will take advantage of the ban to improve their image without introducing real changes. “The only way to avoid this is by establishing sustainability labelling that allows consumers to differentiate between industrial and non-intensive production,” says its director, Alberto Díez. “Everyone has the right to be in the market, but each one in his place.”

There are two moments in human life that are greatly feared. This is because, for centuries, they were seen as the official end of sexual life. In women, menopause not only signified the end of fertility, but also the end of a satisfying sex life, given the arrival of vaginal dryness, a lack of sexual desire, and the discomforts typical of this stage. And men weren’t exempt from this ordeal: in their case, it came in the form of prostate problems, with surgeries that could put an end to erections and/or ejaculation. Both topics were thorny issues that were best left unspoken.

Seguir leyendo

Government strategies for addressing cannabis use have been a constant debate in recent decades within regulatory and public health circles. It is acknowledged that consumption, especially at an early age, increases the risk of psychosis. At the same time, the experiences of various countries after changing their laws show that not all forms of legalization produce the same outcomes: where cannabis is freely commercialized on the market, problematic use increases, but that is not the case in places where the state controls sales.

Seguir leyendo

The link between alcohol and violence is well documented. Some studies estimate that between 30% and 50% of assaults and homicides are committed by someone who is at least somewhat intoxicated. But a study published on June 17 in the journal Criminology suggests that relationship could be weakened in an unexpected way: by Ozempic. The study is population-based, used a sample of 821 adults, and does not allow claims of direct effects on criminality. Still, it offers clues about how violence takes shape in the brain — and about how we might control it.

Seguir leyendo

This fourth-year family medicine resident, who works at the Los Alpes Health Center in Madrid, that night witnessed a chronic, common — but little-known in Spain, even among health staff — clinical scenario caused by daily cannabis or marijuana use: cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), characterized by severe, cyclical episodes of vomiting and nausea.

Seguir leyendo

Regardless of Satrapi’s personal circumstances — which remain unknown for now — science points to yes, while reframing the romantic idea within a biological explanation. For example, intense bereavement can worsen mental health, trigger cardiovascular problems and, ultimately, raise the risk of death. Satrapi’s family said on Tuesday that she died “of sadness a little more than a year after the death of Mattias Ripa, her husband and the love of her life.” They gave no further details.

Seguir leyendo

For decades, treatment and prognosis of the disease has been largely determined by the organ, the anatomical location in which the cancerous mass is located. But now, science has placed a spotlight on something more ambitious: learning the tumor’s signature, or rather, the molecular alterations that characterize its malignant cells. The latest meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), which took place last weekend in Chicago, has given further impetus to precision oncology and highlighted how cancer biology, those microscopic genetic characteristics that define it, are playing an increasingly important role in determining therapeutic approach, and even predicting prognosis.

Seguir leyendo

Michel Rambaud, a chemist and French officer with the Allied occupation forces, devised the project based on the fact that the fermentation process by which yeasts make beer is, in essence, the same process that Penicillium fungi use to synthesize the active ingredient in penicillin. The change of use for the facilities opened a new era: the start of industrial penicillin production saved millions of lives and helped drive a rapid economic recovery across the continent, powered partly by the pharmaceutical sector.

Seguir leyendo
