Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced on Wednesday an increase in the minimum wage — the first so far this decade. She did not specify the size of the raise, describing it only as “responsible,” and said it would take effect on May 1. Rodríguez is trying to ease growing discontent after the hopes of an economic recovery sparked by the January 3 U.S. intervention failed to materialize in people’s pockets. With a march called for Thursday in Caracas to demand economic relief, Rodríguez again invoked her administration’s commitment to “president Hugo Chávez’s spirit of social justice.”

Seguir leyendo

Donald Trump’s war against Iran has been marked by a relentless series of contradictions. The U.S. president has repeatedly walked back his own announcements and promises — sometimes within days, and at times within mere hours — both regarding his real objective in the war (regime change, or preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons?) and the duration of the offensive (initially four or five weeks, then three, later two, and now indefinitely). The campaign, launched at Israel’s urging, has also featured operations that, far from being coordinated, have at times unfolded haphazardly, without the other military partner even being informed.

Seguir leyendo

He has described it in his characteristic style, with plenty of capital letters and exclamation points. But, pending the outcome of the negotiations in Islamabad, what has been achieved so far is a Pyrrhic truce. Washington’s major accomplishment is opening a maritime passage that wasn’t closed before the start of the offensive; along the way, it has offended its allies, damaged its international image, depleted its ammunition stockpiles, and turned its own public opinion against it.

Seguir leyendo

It failed to detonate, but it pounded like a pile driver on the five-story building, terraced on a slope of Mount Carmel. Rescue teams were still working on Monday to assist the distraught residents after recovering the four bodies. Nearby, army bomb disposal experts struggled to deactivate the warhead of a rocket that highlights Israel’s vulnerability, despite its advanced defensive systems.

Seguir leyendo

He was originally transferred on a bus from the northern border to Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco, by Mexican immigration authorities who took over from their U.S. counterparts. The moment he got off the bus in southern Mexico, however, was the last time he received any official assistance in the country. Instead he was left to his own devices in a place where he knows no one and doesn’t even speak the language. “They’re just sending people here. They’re not helping with anything. And then, when you try to do something for yourself, it’s a problem. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s crazy,” says desperately over the phone Jean, a pseudonym for the 33-year-old Haitian.
