The agreement, announced on social media and confirmed by the interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, is the product of an opaque negotiation conducted behind the Venezuelan public’s back, which still does not know its terms and conditions. What is not surprising is that Venezuela’s natural wealth is ending up in U.S. hands. Trump made it clear from the day he ordered an attack on Caracas and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro, now imprisoned in New York, that his real objective was Venezuelan oil. Eight months later, he has announced an unprecedented deal with a leader who was not elected by her citizens and who is collaborating with Washington because it is Washington that put her in office in the first place.

Seguir leyendo

But a new skirmish has served as a reminder that the war remains a very real conflict. On Sunday, U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launch sites on Larak Island, Axios reported first and the regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later confirmed.

Seguir leyendo

The Narsarsuaq Museum no longer has set opening hours. Since the airport closed in the spring, few visitors come to this remote settlement in southern Greenland. However, if someone asks for Ole Guldager’s house and goes to ask him to open it, he is happy to oblige. The museum occupies one of the barracks of the former military base, a long wooden building painted red with a brick chimney. Beside the entrance sits the radial engine of a World War II aircraft, corroded by decades of exposure to the elements. Behind the building stretches the airstrip that U.S. soldiers built in record time. Today, however, that same country appears not as an ally from the past but as a growing threat to the island’s sovereignty and natural resources, especially in places like Narsarsuaq, one of three bases the United States would seek to reopen.

Seguir leyendo

Italy has nearly 4,900 miles of coastline, but enjoying it is not always free. While elsewhere, going to the beach means looking for a space on the sand, in Italy the experience is often quite different. Finding a space to plant an umbrella without paying is a challenge. Along stretches of the coast, access to the sea is managed by private companies through public concessions, which have transformed the beaches into a multimillion-dollar business. The result is an endless forest of perfectly aligned umbrellas, accompanied by their respective sun loungers, waiting to be rented for prices that can exceed €35 ($40) a day.

Seguir leyendo
