Six months ago, when the summit was planned, Donald Trump had not yet been drawn into the Iranian quagmire by Netanyahu, a war that is rapidly weakening him both within and outside the United States. Xi Jinping, on the other hand, has reinforced his image as a serious leader of a China that offers stability and trade to further fuel globalization.

Seguir leyendo

That same day, he announced a new era of the Monroe Doctrine. Hard power was back. But there was something more important: the prospect of starting an election year on the right foot, carefully managing that success, and trying, in the meantime, to stabilize the economy in the lead-up to the midterm elections in November.

Seguir leyendo

A lot has changed since The Devil Wears Prada was released two decades ago, not least fashion. The 2006 film portrayed a landscape that is almost unrecognizable today, no matter how you look at it. In the United States, Bill Clinton was in power. The second quarter of the 21st century, however, dawns with a bleak outlook for European progressives, who hold executive power in only two major countries: the United Kingdom and Spain. For the first time in decades, the federal government is not just tolerating or indirectly funding research into psychedelic substances. This time Trump has decided to actually promote it at the federal level, focusing his efforts above all on ibogaine. But this is not the only substance that has received the green light. The clinical trials already underway with psilocybin and MDMA have been also been given a boost.

Seguir leyendo

The rise of the far right is one of the great issues of our time: it is often cited as a threat to democracy and one of the building blocks of future dystopias. The left, as is its wont, reacts with a mixture of horror, discouragement, and calls for resistance. Caught in the middle, the traditional right seems to be indecisive, out of step with the times, torn between going all in with the risks that entails (the much-discussed preference for the original over the copy), or maintaining a responsible moderation.

Seguir leyendo

But in the case of Otero — the leader of the San Isidro Movement who was arbitrarily sentenced to five years in prison — the discussion with the guards escalated when the artist asked them if they planned to fight the Americans with four AKMs (the Soviet assault rifle), and they replied that they didn’t, but that just one would be enough to kill him.

Seguir leyendo

We are asked to call the agreement announced on April 8 between the United States and Iran a ceasefire. But a ceasefire is not merely a pause in attacks between two actors. It also requires a minimum of shared understanding, a willingness to exercise restraint, and some recognizable political horizon. None of that is guaranteed today. What exists, at best, is a precarious two-week pause.

Seguir leyendo

Viktor Orbán was an energetic and talented anti-communist student leader when the Berlin Wall fell. He studied at Oxford on a George Soros scholarship, and upon his return to Hungary he founded Fidesz, a liberal and pro-European party. But he couldn’t win elections, and with the Great Recession, he turned to the dark side: he orchestrated a sharp, fierce and brutal shift to the far right. In 2010, with Hungary mired in a deep crisis, he finally seized power.

Two news stories, both published on Monday, unintentionally yet eloquently express the state of the world we live in. While NASA announced the crew of Artemis 2, the first manned mission to the Moon in more than five decades, Donald Trump promised to blow up and obliterate power plants and oil wells in Iran if an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is not reached. The first news story symbolizes humanity’s capacity to dedicate all its will, knowledge, and ingenuity to conquering new frontiers. The second one moves in the opposite direction: the capacity to destroy by force and with our feet what our hands have worked unimaginably hard to build. It is not surprising that, in the world we live in, creation and destruction often go hand in hand. But what is curious is that the same nation is capable of producing two such contradictory feats simultaneously.

Seguir leyendo
