Cuba, paralyzed and in the dark

Darkness has become a test of physical and mental endurance for Cubans. Trash piles up in the streets, water is scarce and there is a shortage of medicines. Finding fresh meat, milk or eggs is impossible, and getting around a country without fuel is an epic endeavor. With two full blackouts this week, there have now been seven complete power outages on the island so far this year. The situation of systemic breakdown is unlike anything Cubans have experienced since the arrival of Castroism six decades ago. The population—whose patience and resilience have been strained by official inertia—sees that those who should guarantee a minimum of welfare remain entrenched in an outdated rhetoric, without taking real measures to ease the misery that is hitting the island. The word desperation stopped being adequate a long time ago.

Between April 1955 and June 1956, Robert Frank climbed into a Ford coupe and drove about 10,000 miles to photograph Americans. He carried a Leica, shooting here and there to capture what he found, and he returned from the trip with roughly 780 rolls of film — about 28,000 images; from all of them he selected 83 to assemble The Americans, which was published in 1958 and can now be seen in an exhibition in Madrid at the Fundación Telefónica as part of the annual photography festival PHotoEspaña. “Such an American image,” writes Jack Kerouac in the book’s introduction, “the faces neither manipulate nor criticize nor say anything except ‘This is how we are in real life, and if you don’t like it, I don’t care because I live my life my way, and may God bless us all — maybe… ‘if we deserve it…'” There are some somewhat provocative young men in New York, some stale politicians in Hoboken, an elevator operator in Miami Beach, and a few very elegant Black people at a funeral in St. Helena, South Carolina. Frank’s book doesn’t capture the American Dream that was sold to the rest of the world in the 1950s; the people he portrays are ordinary (even ugly), and some critics at the time branded him a communist.

‘Foreign Tongues’ by the Rolling Stones: This never gets old

Knowing when it’s time to retire is a blessing, unless your name is Mick Jagger, Keith Richards or Ron Wood. The remaining members of the Rolling Stones celebrate 64 years in the business and here they are, recording albums and considering touring if Richards’ arthritis permits. Offering some context here is a phrase from one of the great music writers, Nik Cohn. In his inspired Awopbopaloobop Alopbamboom, he predicted that “the Stones are not made to grow old.” By the way, Cohn wrote that book in 1969. In 2026, the band continues to be relevant, and ready to use diabolical tools if it is necessary (and it is) like TikTok to promote their 25th album, Foreign Tongues, released on July 10. After an 18-year hiatus, the band is releasing its second album in three years with new material. Jagger turns 83 at the end of July, Richards reaches the same milestone in December, and the youngest, Wood, will officially become an octogenarian next year. None of the three thought they would live this long, but since they’re here, they don’t intend to contemplate the triumphs of their past from the comfort of their mansions.

The footballing catenaccio was a strategy, originally developed in Switzerland and popularized in Italy, that prioritized airtight defense and strict man-marking. The idea was that there was no need to have the ball and build the play; it was enough to protect your own goal, counterattack, and hope to catch the opponent by surprise. It is a passive strategy, now largely obsolete, used only by teams that see themselves as inferior. Teams that see themselves as superior want to be aggressive and keep possession so they can dictate the pace of the game. Catenaccio is a strategy for not losing, not a strategy for winning.

Nobody panic, the plan is moving forward. President Miguel Díaz-Canel’s words ring with truth and optimism; they convey a deep conviction and an ironclad commitment never to take a step back: “We have reached a moment of maturity, of reflection, typical of the debate that has unfolded over all these years, which tells us that we must continue defending socialism, but building it with some transformations.” The Cuban leader spoke like this shortly after Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz set out in Havana, a week earlier, a program condensed into 176 measures — which the reporter who covered the story for this outlet, Carlos S. Maldonado, called “drastic” — that will change the face of the island. Market expansion, opening the door to the creation of private banks, allowing private shareholders in state companies, currency devaluations, and an end to egalitarianism by eliminating universal subsidies. There is no doubt: the Cuban government will continue to defend socialism.

Biblical parallels abounded: there were 12 survivors of the Granma — the yacht that transported the fighters from Mexico to Cuba — and a messiah (Fidel Castro) triumphantly entered the new Jerusalem (Havana). A dove landed on his shoulder as he recited the divine word for hours on end, foreshadowing paradise on earth. Meanwhile, on the other side of the water — the Straits of Florida — the Yankee devil threatened this paradise from hell.
