When Woody Guthrie — the most committed voice and greatest agitator of consciences in American music history — died in 1967, his colleague Pete Seeger, another bard of social activism, declared: “Woody will never die as long as there are people singing his songs.” On Bruce Springsteen’s most recent tour, called the Land of Hope and Dreams American Tour, the New Jersey musician closed his concerts with This Land Is Your Land, the most iconic composition by Guthrie — a man who, until a degenerative illness left him bedridden for years, sang and played his guitar across the the United States until his very last breath to fight against exploiters and the unscrupulous powerful. Guthrie’s guitar bears the famous inscription: “This machine kills fascists.” That guitar was never intended to represent physical violence, but rather a cultural antidote to right-wing extremists, the very same people who spewed hatred toward immigrants, the poor, women, and social minorities during the first half of the 20th century.

Seguir leyendo

It’s February 2008. In a way it feels like yesterday, but in another way it was centuries ago. The Hollywood of 2008 is a lot more naïve, less meticulously designed. It is a time when glossy magazines are still flying off the supermarket shelves (and newsstands, which still exist). It is the final days of an era when celebrities, though subject to overexposure and careful analysis of their every move, are still pretty much out of reach; a time when there are scoops and surprises but without the planned circus events of social media (Facebook has been publicly listed for just a year and a half, Twitter is still at an embryonic stage, and Instagram and TikTok don’t even exist yet).

Seguir leyendo

For Generation Z, Robbie Williams, 50, will always be the man who tears off his skin and muscles in the controversial video for Rock DJ, a song released three years after Angels, the single that cemented his solo career. For millennials, Williams will always be the Take That member who quit one of the most popular boy bands in history at its peak. He says he was “asked” to leave. In any case, his rock-and-roll energy and his addiction to drugs and alcohol did not sit well with a band that succeeded on sugary songs, tender looks and a choreography designed to make fans swoon.

Seguir leyendo

Brazil, academic year 2021. They are in Biology class. Professor Gláucia Silva, 32, knows it is urgent to find a strategy to engage them with the biology syllabus. The topic is plants. While she is working on that, she remembers an unlikely connection that came to her mind in 2020 when she saw a Taylor Swift video (Silva is a swiftie, a fan of the American singer). In Cardigan, the star plays a grand piano completely covered in moss. Silva says in an interview that this planted the seed for her project to teach botany using the artist’s videos, a project that culminated in a presentation at the International Congress of Botany in Madrid in 2024 and in a scientific article published in 2025 in Annals of Botany.

Seguir leyendo

Javier Bardem is now part of Hollywood history. On Tuesday, the 57-year-old actor took part in one of those ceremonies so beloved by the U.S. celebrity world that cemented his status as the star that he is: he left his hand and footprints at the TCL Chinese Theatre on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Oscar winner — with four nominations during his career, as well as seven Golden Globe nominations — signed his name (accompanied by a drawing of a sun), and pressed his hands, feet and even nose into the wet cement outside the famous L.A. theater, where more than 200 celebrities, from Marilyn Monroe to Kobe Bryant, have also left their marks over the past century.

Seguir leyendo

When Emma Heming Willis walked into a neurologist’s office nearly four years ago, she left with a whirlwind of emotions. Fear, surprise, anxiety, disorientation. But to cope with them, she left with just one thing: a piece of paper. A single brochure, a single printed sheet, was all the former model — who turns 48 on June 18 — took with her from that medical center. She was drowning in medical jargon and technical terms but was lost as to how to proceed. Because she had just been told that her husband, superstar Bruce Willis, the kind-hearted action hero admired around the world, not only had aphasia — as they had known for months — but also frontotemporal dementia, an incurable and irreversible condition. And there she was, a small piece of paper in her hand, the world crumbling beneath her feet. Perhaps that was the spark that led Heming to become, in addition to a wife, mother, caregiver, and patient advocate, an author.

Seguir leyendo

AMY ADAMS S MODA

<media:text>Amy Adams was Hollywood’s safe bet. The actress who elevated any film, the perennial Oscar contender—with six nominations in 13 years—the performer who seemed incapable of making a wrong choice when it came to projects. Versatility was her most notable quality: she could do drama, musicals, comedy, or action, and in the same year, she could act opposite both Kermit the Frog in The Muppets and Joaquin Phoenix in The Master. Her name was a guarantee of quality. But like legends such as Glenn Close or Annette Bening, Adams joined the club of perennial favorites who never quite manage to win the statuette, and her star seemed to be fading. <media:text>Social media, always so quick to spin narratives, coined a term for Amy Adams—“the flop era”—which is used to describe the period when a celebrity experiences a string of disappointments or failed projects. Adams had fully entered this phase after releasing box office flops like Hillbilly Elegy, The Woman in the Window, Dear Evan Hansen, Disenchanted, and Nightbitch. There are entire articles, tweets, and podcasts dedicated to debating the actress’s supposed career slump and how long it would take her to get out of it. Much like a pop star whose albums no longer debut at the top of the charts, unmet expectations fueled a sense of lost momentum because her projects weren’t making as much noise as her previous ones. Pictured here at one of the 2017 Oscar parties.</media:text>

<media:text>Adams is an anomaly in this age of hyper-exposure. She doesn’t use social media—she tried Instagram but quit because “my routine is too boring”—she isn’t involved in personal scandals, nor does she make inflammatory statements in the few interviews she grants, and her red-carpet appearances are limited to the premieres of her own projects or award shows that request her presence among the nominees. Perhaps this lack of dazzlement by the lights of the movie capital has to do with the fact that she came into the spotlight late: her breakthrough role, in the indie comedy ‘Junebug,’ came when she was 31.</media:text>

For months, she saw him only as a fellow actor, and both of them were in relationships. Everything changed when they crossed paths on the set of a short film and she discovered a side of him she hadn’t known before: that of a man willing to go after what he wanted. “I know you’re getting over another guy, but I’m going to take you out to dinner on Wednesday,” he told her. More than two decades later, they’re still together. Pictured here at the 2025 Golden Globes.</media:text>

Next up is another of Hollywood’s most coveted projects: the new Star Wars universe film, Starfighter, where she’ll share the screen with Ryan Gosling. The actress has said she grew to feel some aversion to acting during her teens, though deep down she knew it was the path she would follow.

Seguir leyendo

Their capacity to coordinate outfits without trying, the way they represented cool without looking for it, and a relationship so discreet it rendered each appearance together a news event, made them one of the most enigmatic couples of the 1990s. Now that the musician’s only daughter has gotten engaged to the former One Direction singer, with each of their paparazzi shots apparently worthy of stylistic autopsy, it seems relevant to look at the intimacy of this relatively short-lived pair — they were together for five years, from 1992 to 1997 — who are nonetheless worthy of posterity, for rather obvious reasons. Both were famous, hot, and rich, but their connection didn’t manage to survive the demands of top-speed personal and professional trajectories.

Seguir leyendo
