The drying of the Aral Sea, between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, is one of the largest agricultural-driven ecological disasters in history. It was the fourth-largest lake in the world until the early 1960s, when it began to shrink after river water was diverted for cotton cultivation under the then–Soviet Union. A study led by Spanish researchers published July 16 in the journal Science finds that its present dry bed is also a significant source of the CO₂ driving climate change. Since 1960, the authors estimate it has released 748 million tons of CO₂, the equivalent of one year’s emissions from Spain, France, and Belgium combined.

Seguir leyendo

They are easy to mistake for a house cat: similar in size, several are completely black, and they have that confident look in their penetrating eyes. At times they can even be docile and remain close to people. They are rarely seen because they are nocturnal and not abundant; there is also little information about them online. However, biologists who study the complex of tiger cat or oncilla species describe it as “one of the most intriguing, enigmatic, and fascinating groups of felines.” And the scientific community is becoming increasingly drawn to them. In 2024, one of its members — the clouded tiger-cat — was recognized as a distinct species after it was spotted in a region of Bolivia where there had been no previous records of its presence, according to a study published this year.

Seguir leyendo

Obesity is written in our DNA and predicts, like a genetic prophecy, the body type we will have. A few decades ago it was easier to rebel against that fate — to fight our genetic programming and keep extra pounds at bay. But in an obesogenic world, surrounded by ubiquitous cheap and addictive food products, it is increasingly difficult. A series of recent scientific articles has strengthened this idea, which is gaining traction in the age of Ozempic and is helping to challenge the notion that obesity is a matter of personal choice or willpower.

Seguir leyendo

To reach science influencers, you first have to make your way through the most popular social media niches: fashion, beauty, wellness, health, food and travel. Then you must navigate a legion of pseudoscientists with highly visited profiles whose theories lack any shred of truth; finally, you must circumvent algorithmic biases that associate STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) with men.

The human mind is a tool for coping with reality, which can be unbearably confusing. Millions of years of evolution have produced a brain capable of generating a useful sense of order for survival out of the overwhelming complexity of the world. Identity is a fundamental part of that simulation, and it is often built in opposition. We know too much about ourselves, and we struggle to simplify ourselves enough to define who we are, but we believe we know what we are not. We are not the barbarians, with their repulsive faces and customs, and since we began discovering human species that were not entirely like us, we have not been Neanderthals: brutish, technologically backward, and doomed to extinction.

Seguir leyendo

The sperm of the fruit fly are enormous—the largest in nature relative to body size. The male Drosophila melanogaster rarely exceeds 1.8 millimeters in length. Its sperm measure the same — 1,800 microns. And it doesn’t produce just one, but thousands, which cluster in the seminal vesicle while they wait to encounter a female. After mating, the problem falls to her. These thousands of sperm cells end up in the spermathecae and the seminal receptacle. There they remain for up to two weeks before reaching the uterus and completing this delayed fertilization. Both organs are shorter than a single sperm cell. So how do flies keep them from getting tangled up? A theory first proposed in the 1970s — one that helped underpin the plastic age — has provided the answer.

Seguir leyendo
<img src="https://images.english.elpais.com/resizer/v2/LUA7EPMJ6VGTFCTSIAUSYM2CYM.jpg?auth=fa078699a74417e508a0d0130c295d6d467c869dcfcf25424c774cb2345a0474" width="1620" height="1080" alt="Two fruit flies mating.

In just a few days, AI has turned mathematics upside-down. First, OpenAI disproved a conjecture of Paul Erdős, a renowned 20th century Hungarian mathematician, which no one had been able to crack since 1946. Soon after, Google DeepMind announced the solution to nine problems, including two that have gone unsolved for 50 years. These incidents are two examples of the impact AI is having on a field as specialized as mathematics.

Seguir leyendo

There are two moments in human life that are greatly feared. This is because, for centuries, they were seen as the official end of sexual life. In women, menopause not only signified the end of fertility, but also the end of a satisfying sex life, given the arrival of vaginal dryness, a lack of sexual desire, and the discomforts typical of this stage. And men weren’t exempt from this ordeal: in their case, it came in the form of prostate problems, with surgeries that could put an end to erections and/or ejaculation. Both topics were thorny issues that were best left unspoken.

Seguir leyendo

Still, it offers clues about how violence takes shape in the brain — and about how we might control it.

Seguir leyendo

The British naturalist was a pioneer in the scientific study of the carnivorous plant, perhaps the most famous one in the world. Seeing it move so quickly made it seem like an animal. The researcher even thought that there must be some plant equivalent to muscles and nerves. More than a century later, the Venus flytrap continues to challenge scientists’ ideas about plant movement. Now, a team of physicists and biologists have show that the secret to its snapping jaws lies in its capability of modifying the mechanical properties of its cellular walls almost instantaneously, a change that sets off the closure of the leaf around its prey.

Seguir leyendo
