In the midst of the Enlightenment, naturalists and explorers set out to traverse the globe with one ambition: to discover, describe, and classify life in all its diversity. Aboard maritime expeditions or venturing into remote territories, they collected plants, animals, and minerals that were then transported to Europe, where they were studied and organized, expanding our understanding of the world.

Seguir leyendo

The protagonist of The Anniversary, the award-winning novel by Italian writer Andrea Bajani, decides to separate himself from his parents, cut off all communication with them, to escape the distress caused by the relationship, irrevocably marked by the totalitarianism and persistent violence — both physical and emotional — exerted by his father. Unwittingly, with this distancing aimed at protecting his emotional well-being, this adult man is also buying himself a ticket to a longer and better life.

Seguir leyendo

Neanderthals and Homo sapiens were more than just sister species. Differing by only a few dozen genes, they had sex and produced offspring repeatedly — a fact that, for some researchers, even calls into question how distinct they truly were. Yet a detailed analysis of the remains of a Neanderthal baby shows that from a very young age, they were already different, at least in their bones. The study, published in Current Biology, also suggests that Homo neanderthalensis children developed at a faster rate than Homo sapiens. The harsher environmental conditions they faced may explain this crucial difference.

Seguir leyendo

Better known as the Berlin patient, this man marked an unprecedented milestone in 2009 by becoming the first person with HIV to be free of the virus after receiving a very particular stem cell transplant. Doctors, cautious at the time, spoke of remission. But, for all intents and purposes, he was cured. There was no trace of the virus in his body, and there never was again: Brown died in 2020, but from a relapse of the cancer he had suffered from. His emblematic case demonstrated that eradicating the AIDS virus was possible and paved the way for a therapeutic strategy that, although difficult to scale to the entire HIV-positive population, now includes 10 cases in remission: 10 people considered cured.

Seguir leyendo

Fama is responsible, among other things, for history remembering as heroes those who did nothing of real value or who took advantage of others’ merits, while forgetting those who truly deserve to be remembered.

Seguir leyendo

Some controversial conjectures

— Hoyle supported some controversial theories. Together with his collaborator Chandra Wickramasinghe, he developed the panspermia theory, according to which life on Earth could have arrived from outer space, transported on comets or interstellar dust. Today it is accepted that it is unlikely any form of life arrived from space, but that molecules arriving from space could have played a decisive role in the origin of life.

— After Hoyle's death in 2001, Wickramasinghe turned to the dark side of science, defending increasingly aberrant ideas, such as that the flu virus comes from space, that HIV or even Covid-19 could have extraterrestrial origins, or that human DNA is modified by biological material arriving from space. All this without providing a single piece of evidence.

Its space agency, Roscosmos, has once again postponed all its launches to the Moon, this time discreetly acknowledging the delay.

Light pollution continues to increase. This is nothing new; Earth’s nights have been getting brighter for some time now. But a new study published in Nature, which confirms this trend, has also found that artificial light is receding in parts of the planet. In some areas, this is due to conflicts or crises, such as in Ukraine, Syria, or Venezuela.

Just as NASA had anticipated, the Orion spacecraft lost contact with Earth on Tuesday at 12:44 a.m. CET, at the start of the sixth day of its mission. “We love you, from the Moon,” said astronaut Victor Glover, minutes before the radio signal was lost. “We’ll see you on the other side,” the mission control center in Houston replied. At 1:25 a.m., the signal was restored, and the live video showed the unprecedented view of a tiny Earth emerging from behind a large Moon, on the opposite side from where it had disappeared a short while earlier. Both resembled crescent moons.

Seguir leyendo

Since launching into space, the four astronauts of the Artemis 2 mission have been in an environment where Earth’s weather is no longer relevant. The four crew members now live under the constant threat of space weather. This means, above all, that they depend on what might happen on the Sun, a sometimes unpredictable giant currently at its peak activity. The star can spew out flares and winds laden with radioactive particles that could be extremely dangerous for the passengers of the Orion spacecraft, which is traveling to the Moon at over 2,400 miles per hour.

Seguir leyendo

The first involves filling a bag with the air to be analyzed and taking it to one of the few laboratories that perform dynamic olfactometry, using human noses. In these centers, a group of panelists or “odor testers” are exposed to the contents of the bag. They start off with a minimal dilution, which is gradually increased. The moment when at least half of the noses perceive something is when the result is determined. This, subsequently, provides an estimated measurement of the amount of odor in the sample.

Seguir leyendo

More than 25 hours had passed since the launch of the largest and most powerful crewed spacecraft in history from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, when the Orion executed the critical translunar injection burn and propelled itself toward its destination: the far side of the Moon. The final confirmation came from the NASA administrator: “Nominal translunar injection burn complete. The Artemis II crew is officially on the way to the Moon,” Jared Isaacman stated in a post on the social media platform X.

Seguir leyendo

After arriving in space, small problems begin to arise for the four crew members of the first mission to the Moon in more than half a century. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman explained at a press conference that communication with the spacecraft was lost briefly during liftoff. The reason for this is still unknown, but communication with the astronauts has been re-established and the mission is continuing without incident.

Seguir leyendo
