Over 40,000 migrants have entered Ceuta irregularly in the past 24 hours, according to initial estimates from security forces. That figure far exceeds the tally from the previous migration crisis in the autonomous Spanish city, in May 2021, when it was estimated that upward of 10,000 migrants breached border controls. The number of arrivals now being reported — which some sources put at closer to 50,000 — effectively increases the exclave’s population of 83,600 people by about 50%.

Seguir leyendo

July in Spain has been “extremely hot,” according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). In fact, along with 2022, it is the hottest since official records began in the middle of the last century. The agency’s data, shared with EL PAÍS, indicates that the average daily temperature in July in mainland Spain was 25.7ºC. This is 2.6ºC hotter than what is considered normal, taking the period between 1991 and 2020 as a reference. During the whole of July, aside from a couple of days toward the end of the month, temperatures have soared above normal, with three separate heat waves.

Seguir leyendo

In the short span of a few hours, from noon to 4 p.m., the Spanish exclave city of Ceuta has been transformed: quiet streets have filled with barefoot young people, the lazy shade of public parks turned into massive open-air sleeping quarters; beaches once dotted with umbrellas and bikinis became crowded with migrants cooling off in the water. Its 3,500-odd residents were evacuated last Saturday as fires raced through the western Madrid mountains, and since then, the place has remained eerily silent, with a layer of ash carpeting balconies, gas stations and vehicles that were abandoned in haste. Although there is no damage within the urban perimeter, the local police are patrolling the deserted streets and warning: “If anyone remains here, they are thieves.” On Tuesday at 5.00 pm officials announced that residents could return to their homes, but the village is still empty. The persistent smell of smoke proves the nightmare is not over.

Seguir leyendo
<img src="https://images.english.elpais.com/resizer/v2/3HQ2CHQLOBHHTBOHPR6NOAY56Y.jpg?auth=4ad979aaf92c676f437e235b8c84af1e28c88327d105dc1d3225d06ed3dfa583" width="6000" height="4000" alt="José Luis, a rural guard, and two firefighters, Carlos and Santi, extinguish a flare-up on an estate near the town of Aldea del Fresno, Madrid.

“In Europe, Madrid was playing in a lower league than it deserved. The major European capitals are Paris and London. And then, there’s another tier: Berlin, Milan, Amsterdam… [but] Madrid wasn’t even there.”

Seguir leyendo

For members only

The three projects are distinct. And yet, they share an intuition. Madrid no longer behaves like the open and relatively egalitarian city that it once was. Or, at least, not only like that. There have always been clubs for Madrid’s elite, but leisure activities mostly revolved around the bar: a democratic space, open to everyone (in principle). The new clubs reflect the expansion of the elite social class and replicate its principle of exclusion. Forbes House has an admissions committee. Vega has a selection process. And, at Metrópolis, memberships sold out before the club even opened. These are places where who gets in is just as important as who gets left out.

There he lost 11 members of his unit. Now, nearly 4,000 miles away, the retired firefighter pulls on his fireproof pants and jacket, straps on his boots and grabs his gloves and helmet. He has lived in Jávea (in Spain’s eastern province of Alicante) for two years. Beside him, three other volunteers — an Englishman, a Colombian, and an Irishman — finish gearing up before climbing into the vehicle they will use to patrol the municipality. It is Wednesday, July 15, and one of the hottest days of the summer so far. The wildfire risk alert is extreme and they patrol daily.

Seguir leyendo

These large blazes are not an exception, are not confined to specific regions, and are not going to disappear. So far this year, up to Tuesday July 28, 173,000 hectares have burned — six times more than in the same period last year — and 35 large fires have been reported compared with seven in 2025. Where are official efforts failing? Experts argue the only solution is to adapt to the new situation and focus on prevention through landscape management. Rural abandonment has transformed the territory and vegetation has proliferated. Added to that is the spread of housing developments and scattered homes on the rural-urban interface, where contact between houses and the forest multiplies the risk and makes firefighting efforts more difficult.

Seguir leyendo

The wildfires ravaging the Spanish province of Ávila in the Castilla y León region and the Madrid region remain active, although their advance has slowed. Firefighting operations continue to be extremely challenging, hampered by strong and shifting winds. After several days of rapid spread, crews managed on Sunday to bring many of the fire fronts under control. However, a number of the most active areas of the blazes remain burning, and the fires are still far from being fully contained.

Seguir leyendo

But the south of Ávila is still smoldering, and sudden flames are flaring up where calm was expected — not least because nothing but bad omens are falling on a summer in which wave after wave of heat is forecast. Firefighters have battled an unpredictable blaze, with gales shifting its direction, sweeping across mountain ranges and dry forests, feeding on unmanaged vegetation, and overwhelming human firefighting capabilities. The situation has improved slightly: “It seems the monster has fallen asleep,” sums up another firefighter, exhausted after five days of chasing the beast as it comes and goes, rising and falling. But everyone remains on alert.

Seguir leyendo

The region of Tudmir, which stretched across parts of the current provinces of Alicante and Murcia and was governed by a Visigoth nobleman named Teodomiro (or Theodomir), put up an effective fight.

Seguir leyendo

From that time, the Early Cretaceous — of which more than 170 sites and over 11,000 dinosaur footprints remain —experts have reconstructed an ecosystem dominated by a vast lake on a broad alluvial plain that was about 400 square kilometers (154 square miles) and where rivers emptied into the area. At that time, the Iberian Peninsula was a large island near the Canary Islands, with a humid subtropical to tropical climate that produced lush vegetation, including conifers and tree ferns, and supported large dinosaurs.

Seguir leyendo

In person, Javier Negre has two modes. Either he doesn’t look you in the eye and answers you in monosyllables, or else he gives you his full attention and energy. If he is interested, he can talk for hours as if someone had pressed a button at the base of his skull, making a torrent of words pour from his mouth. And he is interested in this newspaper story. At 41, this native of Málaga — a former reporter at Spanish national daily El Mundo and now the head of a constellation of outlets accused of spreading hoaxes and far-right demagoguery — is labeled by many people as a charlatan. He wants to prove otherwise.

A prized codex — the ancestor of the modern book — that was kept at Spain’s Royal Academy of History (RAH) was looted a century ago and ended up in the hands of a private collector in the United States. Someone tore out portions of it and the torn-out leaves went to a London rare-book dealer, who allegedly sold it to the American magnate Henry E. Huntington (1850–1927). The desecrated codex was part of the Historia general y natural de las Indias (General and Natural History of the Indies), the manuscript by Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo (1478–1557), whom Emperor Charles V had appointed in 1532 as the first official chronicler of the Indies. The alert about this hitherto unknown attack on Spain’s historical heritage was raised by journalist and history graduate Ramón Jiménez Fraile in the latest bulletin of the Spanish Geographical Society (SGE).

Seguir leyendo
