He died thousands of times before he actually passed away, and when he did, it was exactly as his dream had foretold: he crashed into a rock at 100 miles per hour during a wingsuit proximity flight. Potter, an American, died in 2015 at the age of 43, having established himself as a star of free solo climbing and slacklining, as well as wingsuit flying taken to the extreme. The HBO Max documentary The Dark Wizard chronicles his life story over four episodes, and it is such an impressive production that, by comparison, the Oscar-winning Free Solo seems like nothing more than boring footage. It can also be said that no one, except for his very small circle of loyal followers, ever truly knew or understood his personality, torn between genius and the deepest darkness.

Seguir leyendo

It all began on the shores of the English Channel. John Gillard remembers himself at just 11 years old, walking along the path that led away from the sea, through a sea of blue and white shirts, scarves, and flags, to the austere and venerable Goldstone Ground, in the heart of the town of Hove. In that century-old stadium, demolished in 1997 and now replaced by a shopping center, Brighton & Hove Albion, the legendary Seagulls, the pride of Sussex, the team of Gary Stevens and Gordon Smith, played their matches.

Seguir leyendo

Real Madrid midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouameni trained together again on Thursday morning in Valdebebas, a day after their altercation in Wednesday’s session. The fallout from their fierce confrontation the day before still hung in the air, and the dispute flared again in the dressing room, ending with Valverde on his way to the hospital after slipping in the scuffle and hitting his head on the central table. In line with protocol, he was taken to a medical center for tests and discharged shortly afterward.

Seguir leyendo

Neil Armstrong took a small step to set foot on the Moon and plant a flag, and everyone is still talking about him; he’s a children’s hero. There is also a certain silence surrounding the slender figure (1.86m, 59 kilos) of Yomif Kejelcha, who was right by Sebastian Sawe on Sunday in the final mile of the London Marathon and, like the Kenyan who etched 1:59.30 on his white running shoes, reached the finish line just 11 seconds later.

Seguir leyendo

And football is all about joy.

The jubilation unleashed by a World Cup leaves its mark on the host country. On June 11, Mexico will be able to say it is the only country in the world to have hosted the world’s premier football tournament three times, even four if we include the 1971 Women’s World Cup. However, unlike in 1970 and 1986, the business surrounding the game has exploded, and with it, everything has become more expensive. From jerseys to match tickets, which can reach prices of over 50,000 pesos ($2,869). Even to watch the matches on television, a fan must pay up to 1,000 pesos ($57) to follow all 104 games. Faced with these expenses, thousands of young Mexicans have chosen to be part of the World Cup frenzy through nearly 5,000 murals and all kinds of activities.

Seguir leyendo

The resemblance is reminiscent of televised replays of Diego Maradona’s feats, when viewers tried to make sense of the feat they had just witnessed, now free from the dizziness and excitement that cloud the moment, the fleeting present. A public trial, which began last Tuesday, is attempting to determine whether Maradona, the Argentine football idol, died as a result of the neglect and abandonment he suffered at the hands of the healthcare professionals who were supposed to be caring for him on November 25, 2020. The new trial seems like a carbon copy of the proceedings that began a year earlier, also in the courts of San Isidro, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. The accused and the accusers, the victim and the crime, are the same. But that’s where the similarities end. The narrative of those involved is different.

Seguir leyendo

There couldn’t have been a better birthday present for Aday Mara. He had barely begun celebrating his historic NCAA title when his teammates burst into song, singing “Happy Birthday” at midnight on Tuesday in Indianapolis. The center, born in Zaragoza on April 7, 2005, turned 21 minutes after achieving something unprecedented in Spanish sports: winning the NCAA and doing so as a key player on both offense and defense for the Michigan Wolverines, who triumphed 37 years after their only previous title.

Seguir leyendo

A sports legend, a tormented man. Tiger Woods’ story can be told as much through his feats on the golf course as through his series of mishaps behind the wheel. There’s the myth, the 15-time major winner, the athlete who revolutionized his discipline like no other in the sporting world. There’s the person, repeatedly plagued by his demons. The latest episode, a car accident last Friday that resulted in his arrest and imprisonment, once again places Woods in the eye of the storm and the debate surrounding his behavior and his life, now that he’s turned 50 and still dreams of returning to the elite. To what extent will Tiger destroy himself?

Seguir leyendo

Going to a World Cup match can cost almost the equivalent of a down payment on an apartment in Mexico. Resale prices for the opening match of the World Cup, which will be played at Estadio Banorte on June 11, for example, range from $7,000 to about $77,700 on some internet platforms. Although the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has authorized official resale in the United States, Canada, and other countries, it has not done so for Mexico. What FIFA has allowed in Mexico is the exchange of tickets, which must be done through FIFA’s official platforms. This option is for those who can no longer attend a match and wish to recover their money.

Seguir leyendo
