There couldn’t have been a better birthday present for Aday Mara. He had barely begun celebrating his historic NCAA title when his teammates burst into song, singing “Happy Birthday” at midnight on Tuesday in Indianapolis. The center, born in Zaragoza on April 7, 2005, turned 21 minutes after achieving something unprecedented in Spanish sports: winning the NCAA and doing so as a key player on both offense and defense for the Michigan Wolverines, who triumphed 37 years after their only previous title.

Seguir leyendo

A sports legend, a tormented man. Tiger Woods’ story can be told as much through his feats on the golf course as through his series of mishaps behind the wheel. There’s the myth, the 15-time major winner, the athlete who revolutionized his discipline like no other in the sporting world. There’s the person, repeatedly plagued by his demons. The latest episode, a car accident last Friday that resulted in his arrest and imprisonment, once again places Woods in the eye of the storm and the debate surrounding his behavior and his life, now that he’s turned 50 and still dreams of returning to the elite. To what extent will Tiger destroy himself?

Seguir leyendo

Few, however, are asking — given the chaotic nature of the administration — what will happen if this situation continues until June, when the World Cup begins and six million visitors are expected to arrive. The world’s biggest sporting event, with 48 teams and 104 matches, has been completely overshadowed by President Donald Trump, who is creating uncertainty about the event’s organization.

Seguir leyendo

Going to a World Cup match can cost almost the equivalent of a down payment on an apartment in Mexico. Resale prices for the opening match of the World Cup, which will be played at Estadio Banorte on June 11, for example, range from $7,000 to about $77,700 on some internet platforms. Although the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has authorized official resale in the United States, Canada, and other countries, it has not done so for Mexico. What FIFA has allowed in Mexico is the exchange of tickets, which must be done through FIFA’s official platforms. This option is for those who can no longer attend a match and wish to recover their money.

Seguir leyendo

Since the Spanish cleric Ruy López de Segura became the first unofficial world chess champion in the 16th century, only one woman, Judit Polgár, has been among the world’s top 10 players while there are few among the top 100. The Netflix documentary Queen of Chess focuses on her success on the chess board but does not say much about this. His calling was dance, and he pursued it until becoming a leading figure in Spanish dance and flamenco, eventually directing the National Ballet of Spain from 2011 to 2019. He had no idea back then that skating would become another way of shaping and spreading dance. He didn’t even fully grasp it in 2002, when he received his first request to create a choreography for the French Olympic skaters Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat, who had spent some time in Andalusia working with other flamenco creators — apparently without much success. “It seemed very difficult to me. Flamenco is so rooted in the earth that doing it on ice felt almost crazy. But curiosity got the better of me,” he says over the phone to EL PAÍS. “They saw my work and noticed that I had also choreographed for fashion and film, and I imagine that openness to taking dance beyond the stage was what interested them.”

Seguir leyendo

Positions are often based on ideological or moral convictions. However, a medical and scientific debate also underlies this issue — a debate that is now closer to being resolved. A scientific team from Brazil has conducted a meta-analysis encompassing 52 studies and 6,485 participants, analyzing the body composition and physical fitness of transgender and cisgender women. While transgender women showed greater lean mass — indicating greater muscle mass — they did not exhibit greater physical capacity, such as strength or aerobic fitness, than cisgender women.

Seguir leyendo

The world number one is surrounded by a crowd of about 100 people and two long rows of towering plane trees, interspersed with colorful Indian reeds. He enjoys posing in dark clothing. An elegant jacket, bell-bottom trousers, and loafers give him a very sophisticated air. He is tired, but in good spirits. The night before, he won the Australian Open for the first time to become the youngest men’s tennis player to complete the Career Grand Slam; that is, to win each of the sport’s four major tournaments — the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open — at least once. His presence attracts more and more onlookers, so the conversation with EL PAÍS will finally take place on the third floor of the Crown Hotel, where he has been staying during these past three weeks of sweat, progression, and, ultimately, joy. More and more photos are being taken of him. He has seven Grand Slam titles and is a superstar, but he behaves and answers question like just a regular kid from Murcia.

Seguir leyendo

The IOC will be following the path set last July by World Athletics (WA), the international athletics federation, which required the 1,015 women participating in the World Championships in Tokyo to undergo an SRY PCR test that identifies the gene on the Y chromosome, which is present in males.

Seguir leyendo

Tiger Woods turns 50 this Tuesday. Looking at his battered body after countless surgeries (the latest last October, his seventh back operation, from which he is still recovering), his overflowing trophy cabinet with 15 majors, his more-than-full bank account, a son trying to make his way in the world of golf, and a host of businesses and projects on the table, logic suggests that the man will celebrate this penultimate day of 2025 enjoying the pleasures of life, surrounded by family and friends by a Christmas fireplace.
