It’s midmorning at the Somerset Road entrance to Wimbledon, and there is a buzz because it is no ordinary day. The king is back — Roger Federer. Impeccably suited, the Swiss genius walks toward the Centre Court facilities with that unique, buoyant gait of his, flanked by an elegantly uniformed entourage (all wearing sunglasses) in a scene that echoes Reservoir Dogs and that opening set to Little Green Bag. The movie that now inspires Naomi Osaka — the shooting star who burst on the scene and then, for reasons not entirely clear, vanished — is also by Tarantino. In her laudable effort to return to the top of the tennis world, the Japanese player has been walking the runway and these days wears a kimono with a specific origin: Kill Bill.

Seguir leyendo

Two women are in charge of officiating two matches in the third round of the group stage. American Tori Penso refereed the match between Ecuador and Germany, and Mexican Katia Itzel García made her debut as the center referee in the Netherlands vs. Tunisia game in Kansas City. The presence of both represents a new step in a process that began just four years ago in Qatar, when FIFA included women in the officiating team for a men’s World Cup for the first time. French referee Stéphanie Frappart became the first to oversee a match in the competition.

Seguir leyendo

For the first time, one country, Iran, is playing on the territory of another with which it is at war. The host, which is supposed to open its doors to the world to celebrate football’s biggest global event, is denying entry to officials and fans from nations it considers unwelcome. Contradictions emerge even within its own national team. Folarin Balogun, the United States’ striker and leading scorer, embodies them: while the Supreme Court is expected this week to rule on the future of birthright citizenship that the president wants to eliminate, the U.S. team’s top scorer at the World Cup can only play for the country thanks to that right.

Seguir leyendo

E-Zeta-Ele-Ene!” Enthusiasm is overwhelming for a team of 11 diminutive men who arrive wearing their inevitable balaclavas and shorts and jerseys that are far too large for them. From the start the match is uneven. The event draws 6,000 people to the Jesús Martínez Palillo stadium in downtown Mexico City. Contemporary accounts say the Zapatistas were thin, dark-skinned and no taller than 1.65 meters, and they didn’t even warm up before the match. They were about to chase the ball in their military boots, but several fans sympathized and lent them pairs of sneakers.

Seguir leyendo

It is monsoon season in Bangladesh, with rains and stifling temperatures for fans, but no heat can dampen Bangladeshi passion for the Albiceleste. Since the last World Cup, the Asian country has become the main stronghold of support for Lionel Scaloni’s team and its talisman, Leo Messi. It would be difficult to quantify how many Argentina supporters there are in this country of some 177 million inhabitants, but Bangladeshi writer and sports commentator Rajib Hasan tells EL PAÍS that there are some “120 million fans who watch football every four years when the World Cup comes around” and that of those “more than 60%” support Argentina. The winning team earned two points. World Cup matches were played entirely during the day, without floodlights. He is still remembered that way in Rosario. “His hair was sort of reddish. At year-end tournaments, at seven or eight years old, parents would see him arrive and say, ‘Watch out, the coloradito, that number 10, is playing today.’ You knew you had already lost or were going to have an extremely hard time,” recalls Hernán, one of his opponents back then. “We were on a team called Estrellas Júniors and he was on another called Tiro Suizo. Once we met in the final, which was played over two legs, and we won both 1-0. We had one shot on goal and they had 20. They gave us 10 bicycles, one for each of us. Sometimes we talk about those things in the WhatsApp group,” he says.

Seguir leyendo

Near the famous Beverly Hills neighborhood there is an area of Los Angeles with a curious name: Tehrangeles, a portmanteau of Tehran and Los Angeles. It does not have the glamour or purchasing power of the TV-famous zip code, but lately it has drawn a lot of attention. For decades it has concentrated a significant number of Iranian businesses and is the destination for the large Iranian community living in the United States, far from the ayatollahs’ regime. After four months under the spotlight because of the war between the two countries, the current buzz is that Iran’s national team will play its first two World Cup matches in the Californian capital: on June 15 against New Zealand and June 21 against Belgium.

Seguir leyendo

When Italy won its fourth World Cup in Germany in 2006, Little Italy erupted. The neighborhood’s main artery, Mulberry Street, delivered one of the most talked-about sports celebrations the city remembers. “People went crazy, they celebrated until dawn. The restaurants, food stands, and shops sold out. The street was full of Italian flags,” recalls Anthony Ricci, owner of Benito One, one of the few restaurants still run by Italians in New York’s Little Italy. There are also not many waiters who speak Italian despite the many hospitality businesses that keep the trans-alpine appeal on their signs. Albanians, because of geographic proximity, do speak the language and seat patrons while holding the menu. The area once settled by the first Italian migrants — mostly Neapolitans and Sicilians — who arrived in the late 19th century to make the American dream reality, has also shrunk, swallowed by a growing Chinatown.

Seguir leyendo

While host cities like New York grapple with the high costs of security, transportation, and infrastructure associated with the tournament, Providence is preparing to welcome thousands of visitors drawn by a much more affordable option. The choice was no accident. “Providence was closer to the stadium and much cheaper,” explains Gregor, one of the organizers of the Tartan Army, the traveling Scottish fan group. What began as a plan to bring together “300 or 400 people” ended up growing unexpectedly. “It just got huge,” he sums up.

Seguir leyendo
