In Miami, it’s essential to stay alert for tropical storm and hurricane warnings. Torrential rains and high winds are compounded by rising sea levels due to global warming caused by climate change. South Florida’s porous limestone foundations act like a sponge. As sea levels rise, groundwater rises to the surface. To prevent Miami from becoming Atlantis, the only option is to raise it above the water, a project underway in Sunset Harbour and other residential areas — see the MB Rising Above cell phone app for details. This strategic plan is part of the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact.

Seguir leyendo

In this verdant location, situated 17 meters below sea level, palm trees reach for a sky filled with stars, turquoise saltwater lakes paint a utopian landscape, and time seems to have stood still amid the footsteps of Alexander the Great.

Seguir leyendo

That scene, which was filmed in 2014, established Dubrovnik — a city of just 41,500 inhabitants that is known as the gem of the Adriatic Sea — into an eternal vacation destination. Today, traversing its Jesuit Stairs and surrounding streets in mid-August can be a desperate endeavor. Crowds fill every nook, and prices are exorbitant. Tourism sustains Croatia, representing 20% of the country’s GDP — twice as much as Italy and far above Spain’s 13%. But the harmful effects of the industry’s excesses loom over this small nation. That is why the government has decided to tackle the issue head-on with a package of measures focused specifically on controlling short-term rentals and managing visitor flows.

Seguir leyendo

In 2019, during a trip to Marrakech, Gary He (New York, 41 years old), a photojournalist based in the Big Apple, went into a McDonald’s. It was Ramadan, and he saw that they had an iftar kit — the meal eaten to break the day’s fast, just after sunset — with harira soup, dates, chebakia, and a yogurt and milk drink. He had been pondering for years how a global fast-food chain with more than 43,000 restaurants scattered around the world, according to Statista, offered specialties from the places where it operated; perhaps, he thought, that had been one of the secrets of its success. He found that there was very little information on the subject, so he decided it was time to do some research, delve deeper, and solidify his findings into a project.

Seguir leyendo

Two James Beard Awards

Gary He published McAtlas: A Global Guide to the Golden Arches with Parla Publishing in November 2024. In June 2025, it won two James Beard Awards, the prestigious awards recognizing cookbooks and books related to food and beverages in the United States. These accolades, in particular, have generated "a lot of excitement" for the book, according to its author. So much so that he expects to hear about its international distribution "very soon."

“If you ever plan to motor west, travel my way, take the highway that is best. Get your kicks on Route sixty-six” was Nat King Cole’s advice. But the highway John Steinbeck labeled the Mother Road in The Grapes of Wrath (1939), was not built for kicks. The so-called Main Street of America was established in 1926 to connect Chicago, Illinois, with Santa Monica, California, through the states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

Seguir leyendo

Rumor has it that Trancoso is the best-kept secret in Brazil. There are those who compare it to José Ignacio, the pearl of Uruguay. Others find similarities between it and Comporta, in Portugal. Many speak of the celebrities who perfect their tans on its paradisiacal beaches, of how it is now the domain of the cosmopolitan elite. To see for oneself, it is necessary to fly from the city of Porto Seguro, in the southern part of the state of Bahia, to arrive on the beaches where the sun shines year-round.

Seguir leyendo

Next to the Andalusian flag, a Scottish flag flutters in the breeze in Plaza de España. Its white-and-blue colors are also prominent on the banners hanging in the streets, where the echo of bagpipes can be heard. Pedestrians on their way to the medieval market wear kilts and carry pints of beer. The only thing missing from the landscape is the color green… which is understandable, because the town of Teba isn’t located in the rainy United Kingdom, but rather in the dry and sweltering interior of the Spanish province of Málaga.

Seguir leyendo

Some say Shanghai began as a crab fishermen’s market; others claim its first inhabitants came from southern China, fleeing the Mongols. They settled at the old port, where centuries later they built walls to fend off Japanese pirates — walls that, in 1842, did not withstand British cannons. The British consul chose the junction of two Yangtze tributaries to set up his embassy and control the river. For some, that moment marked the city’s true beginning. Others disagree, believing the real Shanghai — the one of glass towers and colorful lights — was born in 1992, when the Chinese government launched the construction of the financial district west of the river.

Seguir leyendo

Animal Kingdom can’t exactly be described as a hidden gem, mainly because it’s hardly hidden. Spanning 230 hectares, it’s the largest of the dozen parks that Disney, a giant in the entertainment and destination world, has around the world. But it can certainly be said that it’s the most unique and the most important for its social work: there are no castles or princesses, instead it’s home to 5,000 animals of 300 different species, from gorillas to axolotls. It’s also the base for Disney’s worldwide conservation program, in natural spaces spread across more than 125 million hectares, and it’s also considered the most-visited zoo in the world.

Seguir leyendo
