On Wednesday, the meeting between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Secretary of State Antony Blinken resulted in several agreements: “Ongoing cooperation also includes enhanced efforts to disrupt human smuggling, trafficking, and criminal networks, and continuing the work to promote legal instead of irregular migration pathways.” Delegations of diplomatic and security officials from the two countries met in Mexico to try to stop the “unprecedented” arrival of migrants at the U.S. border, people who have been driven to take a brutal journey with their families by the violence, political repression and poverty in much of Latin America. The joint statement issued by the two countries does not specify ways to stop the coyotes who traffic migrants, an enterprise that has recently become a major business for criminal organizations.

Seguir leyendo

In an effort to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, Spain’s health authorities recommended on Tuesday that citizens in Madrid and the Basque province of Álava work from home wherever possible. Working remotely is less common in Spain than in other European countries. According to figures from the European Union’s statistical office Eurostat, 14% of employees work from home in the Netherlands, 13.3% in Finland, and 10% in Austria, while only 4.3% telecommute in Spain, just slightly below the European average of 5.1%.

You’ve probably seen plaques with the message “Asegurada de Incendios” (Insured for Fire) on many buildings in Spain. Maybe you wondered why they were there, and what purpose they served. Most of them can be found in the historical center of cities, because they date back to the 19th century. But this time, we are asking foreigners to point out what they find odd about the Spanish – in particular during the festive holiday season. There are plenty of things that Spaniards take for granted about their customs that can seem very strange when viewed by an outsider.

Seguir leyendo

It was a bargain. I thought I’d been really lucky.” But what looked like good fortune was in fact a scam. When she got to see the apartment, she paid €400 there and then to reserve it. The person who took the money disappeared. And all these years later, she is still waiting for the case to come to court so she can recoup her loss.

Seguir leyendo

How to spot fraud

This is advice from the Spanish Office of Internet Security (OSI) on how to avoid scams when looking for properties.

Be cautious of any offers with very low prices. If you’re interested in a particular area, compare the rental cost with the rest of the offers in the same neighborhood.

Be suspicious if you notice that the photos of the property have watermarks from a different website, or are the same as you have seen in other adverts.

Don’t trust landlords who say that they live abroad and for whatever reason are unable to show you the apartment in person.

Don’t trust anyone who suggests you make use of intermediaries to hand over the keys or the contract.

Be alert if someone is in a hurry. Cybercriminals are always keen to close the deal as soon as possible.

If they ask you for payments via anonymous wire transfer services, do not continue with the process. You should also avoid sending a transfer via a bank that does not have the same nationality as the alleged landlord.
