We’ve built a statistical model to try to answer that question rigorously. The model works in two steps: first we measure each team’s strength using data (Elo ranking, squad market value, etc.); then we simulate the tournament thousands of times.

In the early 1960s, at the World Cup — and in soccer in general — yellow and red cards did not exist. Substitutions were not allowed either.

“The renown Borges enjoyed during his lifetime, documented by a slew of monographs and controversies, still astonishes us today. We know that he himself was astonished, and that he always feared being declared an impostor or a bungler or a peculiar mixture of both.” Thus reads the entry devoted to Jorge Luis Borges in an Enciclopedia Sudamericana dated 2074. With irony, typographical errors and anachronism, it was written, of course, by Borges himself, a century before its hypothetical publication. Forty years after the death of the author of Ficciones and El Aleph, which occurred on June 14, 1986, that fear — if it ever existed, if it was not pure imposture or shy modesty or a blend of both — could be declared abolished. The passage of time has raised his stature even higher and enriched both his figure and his work: Borges has long been ranked among the greatest authors of world literature, and undisputedly occupies the throne of Argentina’s greatest writer.

Seguir leyendo

It also announced it will allocate funds to boost universities’ operating budgets and those of their hospitals, though it will not increase grants for financial-aid scholarships for low-income students. The announced raises represent a partial reversal of the president’s budget-cutting measures, but remain below the university-financing law passed by Congress that Milei refuses to implement.

Enormous banners erected across Plaza de Mayo and the surrounding avenues in downtown Buenos Aires repeated the same slogan: “Milei, comply with the law.” Hundreds of thousands of people chanted it this Tuesday as they marched to demand that Argentina’s hardline government halt its cuts to public universities and release the funds approved by Congress. “The funding of the national university system is in a critical state, and the main cause is that the national government is failing to comply with the basic democratic and constitutional rule: to uphold the university funding law, which establishes a minimum level of resources that ensures the normal functioning of the system,” denounced academic authorities, faculty members and students in a joint statement read at the main protest event. The administration of Javier Milei labeled the federal university march an “opposition act” and reiterated that it will not release the requested funds.

Seguir leyendo

In war and in medicine, the best way to defeat the enemy is to know them as well as possible. This is the maxim that researcher Linus Spatz, 58, has embraced in his scientific career to find vaccines and effective treatments against rare diseases, such as hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome. A variant of this pathogen, the Andes variant, is responsible for the outbreak that struck the cruise ship MV Hondius and has so far caused three deaths.

Seguir leyendo

The hantavirus from the MV Hondius outbreak has been sequenced from samples taken from one of the infected individuals. The results confirm that it is the Andes strain, the most virulent and contagious, but rule out any mutation. Sequencing the virus is now a priority for the scientific community. It holds within its structure a black box of crucial information: it can help identify how the virus spread, why so many people have become ill (to date, there are 10 suspected cases and three deaths from a virus considered very difficult to transmit), and how long it may have been circulating before its detection. As more sequencing data becomes available, a clearer picture of how this virus evolves will emerge. But for now, this work already offers a first glimpse.

Seguir leyendo

Scientific vessels, icebreakers, and cruise ships like the Grand Princess, one of the largest in the world, congregate in the port of Ushuaia. In this context, the MV Hondius wouldn’t stand out. It’s an ice-strengthened expedition ship, 107 meters long, with a capacity for about 170 people. On March 20, 149 people boarded: 88 passengers and 59 crew members. They represent 23 nationalities, and 14 are Spanish: five from Catalonia, three from Madrid, one from Galicia, and one from Valencia. The latter, oceanographer Aitana Forcén-Vázquez, is also part of the crew, acting as a guide for the tourists. There’s also an elderly Dutch couple who traveled to various locations in Chile and Argentina before arriving here, at the southernmost point of the continent. The MV Hondius advertises numerous amenities and a luxurious atmosphere on its website. Fares for this voyage range from $17,600 to $29,400. There are scheduled stops at some of the most remote islands on the planet, visiting diverse ecosystems and ending in Cape Verde, known as the “African Caribbean.” This is the logbook of their journey.

Seguir leyendo

Meanwhile, a new scandal has reached the courts regarding millions of dollars in irregular expenses detected at Nucleoeléctrica Argentina, the company that operates Argentina’s nuclear power plants. Her cart sped along the dirt roads of the Orthodox Mennonite colony of La Nueva Esperanza (“The New Hope”), in the rural Argentine province of La Pampa. That day, she had spent hours away from her husband’s house, sheltering with her two young daughters in a shed, attempting to avoid his insults. The 33-year-old woman decided that the moment she had fantasized about so many times had finally arrived.

Seguir leyendo

Photography:

Anita Pouchard Serra

Design and layout:

Mónica Juárez Martín and Ángel Hernández

Visual editing:

Gladys Serrano and Mónica González

Translation:

Avik Jain Chatlani
