The so-called “white gold” is essential for the lucrative electric vehicle industry, dominated by the Asian giant, as it is used in battery manufacturing. Between 2021 and 2023, demand for lithium increased by 250%, according to data from the International Energy Agency. More than half of the world’s lithium reserves are concentrated in the so-called “lithium triangle,” between Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile, which explains why China has set its sights on Latin America, with at least 28 projects linked to the lithium supply chain in five countries, including Mexico and Brazil.

Seguir leyendo

Faced with Donald Trump’s aggressive and erratic policies during his second term in the White House, his southern neighbors are increasingly looking more favorably toward China, the United States’ main strategic rival. The Asian giant is the only major power gaining prestige among Latin Americans, according to a survey conducted by the German Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Foundation, the magazine Nueva Sociedad, and the Diálogo y Paz group, released this week. China is gaining new supporters in the region (up by 6 points) while the positive image of the U.S. is plummeting (a 17-point drop) and that of Europe is declining, dragged down by Germany and France. Twelve thousand people in 10 countries participated in the survey.

Seguir leyendo

Cerro Rico (“Rich Mountain”) is located near the Bolivian city of Potosí. It once produced up to 80% of the silver of the Viceroyalty of Peru (1542-1824) and as much as 60% of global production during certain periods of the 17th and 18th centuries. But Indigenous labor was insufficient to extract the thousands of tons of ore flowing from the mountain.

The embodiment of economic prosperity in Bolivia has a name: Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

To cook chipa de pescado (a baked fish dish) with roasted yucca, the Asháninka Indigenous community of Peru must first gather bijao leaves to wrap the scaled fish in a leaf that will also serve as a plate. This community must also have fished for boquichico (black prochilodus) or chupadora (suckermouth catfish), in the Pichis River basin; quite a challenge since the widespread use of explosives and nets that barely allow the fish to grow. It involves the selection of seeds, the methods of cultivation and fishing, how and with whom food is eaten, and how it is served. In a world where Western diets are increasingly limited to fewer food groups, keeping this diverse and colorful gastronomy alive is an act of resistance.

Seguir leyendo

The year was 1965. Military regimes dominated Latin America, and Bolivia was no exception. As one of the first measures of his de facto government, General René Barrientos ordered the takeover of mining camps, which were home to the largest militant forces of the leftist parties. One of the most important was the Milluni center in the highlands of La Paz, as it housed La Voz del Minero (The Miner’s Voice), a radio station and communication hub for mobilizations.

Seguir leyendo

The history of the Yuracaré can be told through their refusal to integrate with Bolivia’s colonial system. They settled on the border between the country’s mountain foothills and its plains and valleys. There is no evidence that they had contact with the Incas, as was the case of other tribes of the Antisuyo lowlands, the northeastern region of the Inca empire. During the reign of the Spanish viceroyalty, evangelizing missions were able to make few inroads with the Yuracaré. Later, beginning with the second half of the 20th century, Quechuas and Aimaras migrated to the same area to practice agriculture. Now, a new chapter has been written in the story of the Yuracarés with this year’s publication of a Yuracaré-Spanish dictionary — an attempt to save a language currently spoken by some 900 individuals.

Seguir leyendo

At 26, fresh out of university, in 2004 she accepted the position of director of the San Ignacio de Moxos School of Music, a decision that transformed her life and, above all, the lives of the Moxos people, one of the Indigenous nations recognized by the Plurinational State of Bolivia.

Seguir leyendo

Although the first canals to bring this resource to the highlands date back to the Inca era, climate change has made that supply increasingly unstable, and illegal mining in the nearby mountains poses yet another threat.
For Ubaldo, who switched from traditional agriculture to the more profitable cultivation of herbs for cosmetic use, the availability of clean water has become even more crucial, as the family business is strictly organic.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will resume operations in Bolivia after being expelled in 2008, along with the U.S. embassy, by the government of Evo Morales. This is one of the first decisions of Bolivia’s new president, Rodrigo Paz, which was announced by Interior Minister Marco Antonio Oviedo. “We will have the collaboration of several international agencies, including, of course, the DEA.
