That’s where He Tingbo (China, 1969), president of Huawei’s semiconductor business, comes in.

Chinese espionage in the European Union and neighboring countries reveals its full scope when certain pieces are connected. The May 20 arrest in Germany of a German couple of Chinese origin who were taking military-technology information from universities is a particularly notable case. But it is only one of many. The episode exposes a strategy of large-scale, coordinated infiltration when placed alongside other arrests in EU member states and neighboring countries. In total, around 30 agents and collaborators have been uncovered in Europe and its vicinity in just the past two years; some were arrested, several expelled, and others are awaiting trial. China typically denies all espionage allegations and describes them as slander.

Seguir leyendo

From that moment, the festival and the market running alongside it diverged in their reactions to the digital tool: while Cannes imposes limits on its use (even though one of its sponsors, which joined in 2026, is Meta, owner of Meta AI) and artists warn of its dangers, the market saw a rush of Chinese films made with AI and a handful of Western projects embracing its use. Filmmakers will be wary, but the industry has rushed to exploit AI.

Seguir leyendo

More than 10 years of negotiations come to an end this Friday in Mexico: the European Union and the Latin American country will sign an update to the trade agreement that has been in force since the beginning of this century. The move — arguably more significant than the text of the renewed pact — signals a clear rapprochement between two parties whose commercial — and, to an extent, geopolitical — strategies have been shaken by Donald Trump’s return to the White House, based on protectionism, in barely a year and a half. For both, it is a renewed bet on multilateralism in international relations and a way to diversify alliances and risks to soften the impact of Washington’s unpredictable, unilateral decisions. The update will be signed this Friday in Mexico City by Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

Seguir leyendo

The European Union is stepping up its diplomatic offensive over Greenland. Amid new moves by U.S. President Donald Trump to gain control of the vast Arctic island, Europe is making a play to strengthen cooperation with the self-governing territory, part of the Kingdom of Denmark and a strategic asset for its potential in raw materials, energy, and its location. Brussels keeps sending signals to the Greenlandic government and its citizens. One example is the visit this week by the European commissioner for International Partnerships, Josef Síkela, to take part in a business forum that aims to present the island as a land of major opportunities. The EU official’s trip coincides with that of controversial U.S. special envoy Jeff Landry and with the opening of a new U.S. consulate in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, this Thursday.

Seguir leyendo

More than half of the world’s lithium reserves are concentrated in the so-called “lithium triangle,” between Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile, which explains why China has set its sights on Latin America, with at least 28 projects linked to the lithium supply chain in five countries, including Mexico and Brazil.

Seguir leyendo

Since humans developed the ability to study DNA extracted from fossils, we have uncovered a mystery that until now had no answer. In the DNA of some human species, including our own, Homo sapiens, there were “super-archaic” markers, vestiges of older, unknown species with which we had interbred and produced offspring. Unable to determine who these genomic intruders were, some scientists called them ghost populations.

Seguir leyendo
