It’s a euphemism for white Anglo-Saxon Protestants and, increasingly, for evangelical nationalists as well. This language is being deployed systematically. In practice, the U.S. Supreme Court has legalized a machinery of control in which ethnicity — even how someone speaks, dresses, or what they do for a living — can be used as justification for federal officials, quasi-military forces like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to stop someone and ask for “your papers, please.”

Seguir leyendo

The minimum wage in the United States is a fundamental labor standard designed to guarantee a basic level of income for workers. Currently, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, an amount that has not changed since 2009. However, many states and cities have set their own minimum wages in response to the rising cost of living and public demand for wage reform. For example, Washington State has one of the highest minimum wages in the entire country at $16.66 per hour, followed closely by California at $16.50. These rates are typically adjusted annually based on inflation or cost-of-living indexes. Some local governments, such as Seattle and San Francisco, apply minimum wages even higher than those of their respective states.

Seguir leyendo

The undocumented migrant has been fighting deportation since 2009, when she was detained for a minor trafficking incident in the Denver metropolitan area. The Republican candidate continues to avoid discussing public policy and governance, to instead keep focusing on his anti-immigrant rhetoric and echoing police reports that prove the presence of foreign criminals in U.S. cities (such as those of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua).

The memory of Denver the way it was nine months ago seems like something from another world. In mid-January 2024, the capital of the state of Colorado had reached peak occupancy at its makeshift temporary migrant shelters, which were holding 5,200 people. Nearly all of them were asylum seekers sent by bus from Texas by Governor Greg Abbott, and who were sleeping in hotel rooms paid for by the city. On the streets, entire families expelled from the shelter system for reaching the maximum time limit were reported to be spending the freezing winter nights at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, under bridges, and lining up for hours to get a hot meal.

Seguir leyendo
