This is the deadline that, according to U.S. State Department sources speaking to USA Today, Washington has given the Cuban government as part of ongoing negotiations. Osorbo is acting as if nothing new is happening. There have been other releases, other agreements with the Vatican or the Americans, other moments when it seems something is about to happen for him, but nothing ever comes to pass. When Cuba announced the release of more than 500 prisoners in early 2025, Osorbo’s friends (his stage name alludes to bad luck in the Yoruba language) asked him if he had any hope that he would be among those listed. “I’m unlucky,” he said. “Nothing good has ever happened to me.”

Seguir leyendo

Miguel Díaz-Canel has issued a clear warning to the United States in response to threats of regime change. “Stepping down is not part of our vocabulary,” the Cuban president said in an interview with the U.S. network NBC. “In Cuba, the people who are in leadership positions are not elected by the U.S. government, and they don’t have a mandate from the U.S. government,” he said when asked if he has considered leaving his role in exchange for lenience from Washington, which has imposed an economic blockade in a bid to strangle the communist leadership. “We have a free sovereign state, a free state.

What began in the 1960s as a cooperative initiative has, over time — and with Cuba’s economic decline — become a major source of revenue for the Havana regime. He was originally transferred on a bus from the northern border to Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco, by Mexican immigration authorities who took over from their U.S. counterparts. The moment he got off the bus in southern Mexico, however, was the last time he received any official assistance in the country. Instead he was left to his own devices in a place where he knows no one and doesn’t even speak the language. “They’re just sending people here. They’re not helping with anything. And then, when you try to do something for yourself, it’s a problem. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s crazy,” says desperately over the phone Jean, a pseudonym for the 33-year-old Haitian. He fears that speaking publicly will jeopardize his legal proceedings in both Mexico and the United States.

Seguir leyendo

On the one hand, Washington is pressuring Cuba: from its energy embargo to its threats of some kind of military intervention. On the other hand, it is carrying out behind-the-scenes negotiations — acknowledged by both parties — and has made moves to ease the blockade, such as allowing a Russian oil tanker to reach the island last week, and indicating that future arrivals will be decided “on a case-by-case basis.” This is Donald Trump’s two-pronged strategy toward Cuba, the country he said he will target “next” once he has resolved the offensive against Iran.

Seguir leyendo
<img src="https://images.english.elpais.com/resizer/v2/DVCOATGB3JD5DDO7RIE7AVITGM.JPG?auth=a6049ce07a84f0aac4131e5834a8f0b70471719a644b0051150d81b098052d8d" width="5723" height="3815" alt="A group of people wait in line at a store in Old Havana, Cuba, on March 23.

In a statement published in the official newspaper, Granma, the regime defended the decision as a “humanitarian and sovereign” gesture. This is the second prisoner release since the United States increased pressure on the island with an energy embargo that is causing the country’s economic collapse.
