On the morning of April 25, the Nicaraguan writer and poet Gioconda Belli received an alert from Managua: customs officials had banned the entry of her latest novel, Un silencio lleno de murmullos (A Silence Full of Murmurs), into the country from which she is in exile. The book joins other titles by Nicaraguan authors whose sales have recently been blocked by the regime of Daniel Ortega and his wife and co-president, Rosario Murillo. “The dictatorial power fears the truths that literature illuminates. That is why they expel us, exile us, and imprison us. This happens and has happened to writers throughout history,” Belli reacted. The censorship of her work is the latest chapter in a systematic offensive that has outlawed 81 cultural institutions in the country, confiscated festivals, and replaced independent creative work with an official offering controlled by the presidential family.

Seguir leyendo

When Donald Trump publicly questioned control over the Panama Canal, alarms went off across Central America.

Donald Trump based his presidential campaign on the promise of non-intervention in foreign wars, of not sending U.S. forces back into protracted conflicts like those in Iraq or Afghanistan, and of not getting involved in reconstruction efforts in those countries. Since taking office, he has bombed Houthi positions in Yemen and ISIS positions in Syria, and has attacked Iran and Nigerian territory. But his intervention in Venezuela without congressional authorization, in the style of the coups that Washington perpetrated for decades in Latin America, is—because of its ambition, its scope, and its disregard for international rules—the most representative of the new world order the Republican president wants to impose.

Seguir leyendo

Nicaragua’s co-presidents, Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, resorted on Tuesday to an old whitewashing tactic: releasing and parading political prisoners who had been forcibly disappeared. In the absence of any prominent international guests, including the notable absence of the heads of state of Cuba and Venezuela, the Sandinista leader devoted much of his speech to praising China and Russia, while advocating for the dissolution of the United Nations and virulently attacking Europe. In his 81-minute address, Ortega ordered the redoubling of “revolutionary vigilance” to “capture and prosecute traitors” in the Central American country.

Seguir leyendo

On the Costa Rican banks of the San Juan River, José María Flores Arróliga’s boat anchors next to a makeshift dock made of planks. The current is constant, yet gentle.
