The European Union is stepping up its diplomatic offensive over Greenland. Amid new moves by U.S. President Donald Trump to gain control of the vast Arctic island, Europe is making a play to strengthen cooperation with the self-governing territory, part of the Kingdom of Denmark and a strategic asset for its potential in raw materials, energy, and its location. Brussels keeps sending signals to the Greenlandic government and its citizens. One example is the visit this week by the European commissioner for International Partnerships, Josef Síkela, to take part in a business forum that aims to present the island as a land of major opportunities. The EU official’s trip coincides with that of controversial U.S. special envoy Jeff Landry and with the opening of a new U.S. consulate in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, this Thursday.

Seguir leyendo

This is especially true because they have restricted the use of military bases on European soil — not only Spain, but also France, the United Kingdom, and even Italy have placed limits or conditions on the use of these facilities or prohibited military aircraft from flying over their airspace en route to the Middle East — for a war about which they weren’t even warned.

The first year of Donald Trump’s second presidency has opened the biggest rift between the United States and Europe since the forging of the transatlantic bond at the end of World War II. The first blow was struck in February 2025 by Vice President J.D. Vance at the Munich Security Conference. Vance caused astonishment by arguing that the greatest danger to Europe was not Russian missiles, but European leaders themselves, whom he accused of undermining democracy and censoring far-right ideas.

Seguir leyendo

His great success, and also his own decline. After nine years as head of state of France, he has gone through practically every phase. Today, after a period riddled with political crises, he is entering the final stretch of his term. Weakened internally, he has decided to focus on his role as an international leader and staunch opponent of the new U.S. imperialism, ending his adventure as he began it with his famous Sorbonne speech. That is to say, by invoking the urgent need for European sovereignty. “It is time for Europe to wake up, to emerge from its status as a geopolitical minority. If we do not decide for ourselves, we will be swept away,” he said in an interview at the Élysée Palace with EL PAÍS and a group of six international newspapers, addressing some of the points he will propose at the informal meeting of EU leaders on Thursday, focused on revitalizing the EU economy.

Seguir leyendo

In this way, albeit without formal coordination, they are joining the group of countries that refuse to yield, such as China, India, Canada, and Brazil.

Seguir leyendo

A more emboldened Donald Trump, with openly imperialistic intentions, will arrive Wednesday at the Davos Forum to meet with NATO leaders at a summit that is shaping up to be crucial for the future not only of Greenland, but of NATO as a whole.

On July 4, 2026, the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding. Rarely has a milestone coincided so precisely with the exhaustion of the very idea that made it possible. It will be like toasting a world that no longer exists. The nation that for decades presented itself as the guarantor of global democratic order has, according to the most rigorous political scientists, crossed the line separating democracy from competitive authoritarianism. This is neither a metaphor nor rhetorical exaggeration. In 2025, the number of autocracies in the world surpassed that of democracies for the first time. While the guardian has become the arsonist, others watch and wait. But the most troubling thing is not that authoritarians are gaining ground — it is that those who should oppose them seem to have forgotten why.

Seguir leyendo

And his strategy involves subduing the weaker opponent until they eventually give in. While Trump accused Zelenskiy on social media Sunday of being ungrateful and responsible for the war, the Ukrainian leader’s emissaries were saving another match point in a meeting with the Americans in Geneva.

Seguir leyendo
