Fugitive Natalio Grueso: In hiding with a glass of wine on an island in the Algarve

One of the first jobs of officers tasked with locating fugitives is to study their life and work. In author Natalio Grueso’s case, there were plenty of clues. Just a week ago, the Civil Guard found him in the Portuguese Algarve, a region that appeared in his books. There, he was leading what we think of as a writer’s life — taking notes while drinking white wine. Grueso, 55, went missing two years and four months ago, around the time he was expected to start an eight-year prison sentence for the embezzlement of public funds while managing the Niemeyer Center of Asturias between 2006 and 2011. It was a corruption scandal that stained his reputation and drove him underground.

Alleged mastermind of arms trafficking ring supplying military hardware to Mexican organized crime arrested in Madrid

Weapons of war manufactured in Bulgaria are supposedly sold to equip African armies but are instead diverted to Mexico, ultimately ending up in the hands of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), currently the most dangerous and violent drug trafficking organization in Mexico. In recent months, the United States has dismantled an alleged arms trafficking ring supplying the Mexican cartel, with one of its key locations in Madrid. The alleged mastermind, Bulgarian citizen Petar Dimitrov Mirchev, was located in the Spanish capital. U.S. authorities have linked him to Viktor Anatolievich Bout, the Russian arms trafficker known as the “Merchant of Death.”

Spanish police dismantle mafia-linked drug-running network in the Canary Islands

Three men who lived a life of luxury and who spent their days tending to a sailboat called Rossio have allowed the Spanish Civil Guard to dismantle a mafia-linked criminal network that investigators attribute to the trafficking of huge consignments of cocaine through Spain’s Canary Islands. The operation, code-named “Adriática,” resulted in the seizure of 700 kilos (1,540 pounds) of cocaine and four arrests. The Spanish police said that the case confirms major European criminal organizations are capable of deploying their members over a long period of time and in several locations, and underlined the “geostrategic importance” of the Canary Islands in maritime drug trafficking. European mafias are increasingly working in tandem with Latin American cartels to import vast quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine to the EU, according to a joint Europol-DEA analysis carried out in 2022.
