These unmanned aerial vehicles, already deployed by the Russian and Ukrainian armies, are manufactured for a few hundred dollars using readily available civilian components and have already caused at least four deaths — the latest announced on Monday — and several serious injuries among Israeli soldiers and contractors. “Using them is even easier than playing a video game,” says Yehoshua Kalisky, a senior researcher at the Israel Institute for National Security Studies (INSS).

Seguir leyendo

There is nothing normal about the lives of Tyre’s residents. The largest city in southern Lebanon — beloved by local and international visitors as a Mediterranean paradise amid banana plantations and the ruins of ancient civilizations — is currently grappling with the fear of becoming a prime target for the Israeli army. Although Lebanon is under a supposed temporary truce, Israel left its message written on four residential buildings it demolished in the city center at the last minute before the ceasefire. Now, the rubble from those attacks — one of which, described by locals as an earthquake, was a massacre, leaving some 20 dead while two more people are still missing — has instilled in residents the fear that Israel will resume the war with the same ferocity with which it paused it.

Seguir leyendo

The suburbs surrounding Beirut to the south of the Lebanese capital — Dahiye means suburb in Arabic — show such destruction after 46 days of the latest Israeli offensive that, in some areas, a return to civilian life seems impossible. Last Saturday, thousands of residents returned to the area to assess the damage, unsure whether the 10-day ceasefire announced by the United States on April 16 — which went into effect last Friday — will provide the necessary diplomatic leeway, as the Lebanese government hopes, to make the ceasefire permanent and prevent a resumption of war between Israel and the armed Islamist militia Hezbollah.

Seguir leyendo

Tehran, which has proven to be a more formidable adversary than the U.S. president anticipated, appeared to have established the outlines of a potential agreement on Wednesday, after the Republican president described Iran’s 10-point plan in the early hours of the morning as an acceptable starting point for negotiations. Fired from some 1,200 miles northeast with a payload of hundreds of kilograms of explosives, the projectile struck their living room. It failed to detonate, but it pounded like a pile driver on the five-story building, terraced on a slope of Mount Carmel. Rescue teams were still working on Monday to assist the distraught residents after recovering the four bodies. Nearby, army bomb disposal experts struggled to deactivate the warhead of a rocket that highlights Israel’s vulnerability, despite its advanced defensive systems.

Seguir leyendo

On March 22, Israeli news broadcasts were filled with images of the wounded, ambulances, and houses without walls. In just two hours, two missiles launched from Iran had directly impacted the towns of Arad and Dimona, the heart of Israel’s nuclear weapons program. They left nearly 200 wounded and the certainty that chance prevented a massacre, as they did not directly hit a building. In a country with cell phone alerts, air raid sirens, and a missile defense system with a 90% effectiveness rate — according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) — the failure to intercept two missiles in quick succession generated concern and, immediately, questions about the capacity to wage a war of attrition with Iran, longer and more extensive than the 12-day conflict last June. The IDF eventually admitted that they were not special missiles, but rather that they had attempted to shoot them down with a modified version of a cheaper and more readily available system (David’s Sling), instead of the Arrow 3, originally designed for such attacks from over 1,200 miles away.

Seguir leyendo

Its importance lies, first and foremost, in the obvious relief it could provide to Gazan civilians subjected to a medieval siege that a United Nations commission of experts has deemed genocide on the part of Israel. But, on a second level, the plan has significant geopolitical consequences. Although its outcome is unclear, some of the dynamics crystallized by this initiative appear likely to reverberate over time.

Israel launched a large-scale attack on Iran early Friday morning, a decision with unpredictable consequences. Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, which has dubbed the offensive Operation Rising Lion, claims to have deployed some 200 combat aircraft against some 100 targets related to one of Tehran’s most sensitive elements: its nuclear program. Over the course of several hours, the attack struck nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories, and military officials. The objective, according to Netanyahu, is to prevent Iran from obtaining atomic weapons, something it could achieve “in less than a year.” Tehran, which has promised a “severe” counterattack, subsequently launched around 100 drones toward Israeli territory.

Seguir leyendo
