Artificial intelligence (AI) could be the final nail in the coffin for email, a form of communication that is increasingly less used, especially among young people, who see it as a relic of the past. Many users receive a daily deluge of emails that don’t interest them in the slightest. An analysis by Hostinger, one of the world’s leading web hosting and domain providers, reveals one of the reasons for the irrelevance of most of the electronic communications we receive: 87% of global email traffic is generated by automated systems, meaning it’s not written by people. Another striking finding from their report is that only 44% of emails passed the recipients’ security checks (anti-spam and antivirus) and made it to their inbox.

Seguir leyendo

In his essay Writing Is Ceasing to Be a Writer, Enrique Vila-Matas recounts that he chose his profession because he wanted to be free and didn’t want to go to an office every morning. When he made that decision, he didn’t know he would end up living “like a mole in a tunnel, working day and night.” In interviews and memoirs, many novelists admit that, aside from their calling, what they wanted most when they began writing was to escape the cold of the street by staying home on those weekday mornings when most employees are commuting and going about their daily routines. Shortly afterward, they realized that “calling someone a disciplined author is redundant,” as Juan José Millás often points out, because literature demands many hours of concentration each day.

Seguir leyendo

At 31, this Barcelona-born computer engineer is finishing her doctoral fellowship at Goldsmiths University with the agency Forensic Architecture, where she investigates the use of AI by police and military forces through evidence found in the physical space. “I worked for two years for Airwars, the organization that analyzes deaths in armed conflict, and I started my PhD on October 1, 2023, a week before October 7, when everything changed and the agency focused on documenting what happened in Gaza,” she explains on a Friday during a brief stop in Barcelona before returning to London, where she lives. The documents from that investigation are the ones that have been presented in the South Africa v. Israel case, brought before the International Court of Justice of the United Nations (ICJ), which seeks to demonstrate that Israel has undertaken actions to destroy the Palestinian population that go beyond self-defense. On June 18, an exhibition with an installation by Forensic Architecture about this research will be on display at the Three Chimneys in Barcelona as part of UIA, the international congress of architects.

Seguir leyendo

In Moscow, a city where 180,000 cameras identify passers‑by using artificial intelligence, phones been cut off from the internet for a week, on the orders of Russian security services. “If you ask us how long these measures will last, they will last as long as new measures are necessary to ensure the safety of our citizens. Citizens can have no doubt that the most important thing is to guarantee security,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in a twist of logic worthy of a dystopian novel. No contacting family members, no reading the news, no ordering a taxi, no accessing banking apps, no completing administrative procedures. In a world reshaped by the internet, the Kremlin is rehearsing a total blackout for whenever circumstances turn against it.

Seguir leyendo

Internet niches, like pleasure-seeking, are becoming increasingly specific. One such niche involves watching TV shows or movies featuring people who are efficient in their work, skillfully and precisely planning, executing, and solving problems. This phenomenon — which does not include sexual content — is called competency porn. In January, coinciding with the premiere of the second season of The Pitt, this trend skyrocketed. The American series, set in the emergency room of a Pittsburgh hospital, is one of the most frequently cited examples of competency porn. For 300,000 years, these tasks were the exclusive domain of living beings. Not anymore. It’s not controversial: it’s a fact. And it has happened suddenly.

Two years ago, we were asking ourselves here at EL PAÍS if the “normal man” would make a comeback — meaning, whether we weren’t seeing the return to glory of the guy lacking in chiseled abs, generous biceps and a square jaw, represented in today’s cinema by Hovik Keuchkerian and Josh O’Connor and, classically, by legends like Humphrey Bogart and Marcello Mastroianni. That question remains unanswered. But it now seems clear that the hypermasculine physique remains deeply entrenched. Gigantic, gym-sculpted male bodies are dominating our screens, particularly in hits like Rivals and Emily in Paris and of course, in their natural environs: action and superhero movies.

Seguir leyendo

One of the 350 members of the Telegram group has just sent a photo of a young student from Oaxaca, who had just returned home from school, wearing a skirt. A cascade of messages begins in the chat: “It’s impossible not to look at how her skirt adjusts,” “lift it up more,” “what’s she wearing, a thong?” “she’s so hot.” The disturbing conversation takes a sinister turn when one of the participants reveals who sent the image: “I think he said up there that it was his daughter or stepdaughter.” These are some of the messages revealed at the end of November by the DLR Collective, a small team of hackers fighting against digital violence. The Telegram group included adults, but also minors. The publication of the conversation on social media led to an investigation by the Oaxaca Attorney General’s Office, which began interviewing students from the two high schools in the capital where the victims study. Despite the seriousness of the issue, it is just one of the hundreds of complaints that the DLR Collective says it receives daily.

Seguir leyendo
