In a scenario constructed from the official statistics promoted by the government, Javier Milei’s Argentina is a happy world: poverty is falling to its lowest level in the last seven years, economic activity is reaching record highs, and fiscal balance is being maintained. But, simultaneously, more and more people say that their present situation doesn’t align with the successes touted by the far-right president, a disconnect pointed out not only by his detractors but even by figures of economic orthodoxy aligned with his policies. Are the official figures false? No, but they are averages that fail to capture an unequal and fragmented socioeconomic reality. In this context, social discontent is spreading, fueled by corruption scandals: almost all opinion polls indicate that the president’s approval rating is at its lowest point.

Seguir leyendo

On Via Rasella, in the heart of Rome, stands a bullet-riddled building. The machine gun fire left so many holes that you can see them with a quick Google Maps search. It was there, on the afternoon of March 23, 1944, in the German-occupied city, that a company of the SS Bozen Regiment was marching when the GAP partisan group detonated two bombs. Thirty-three soldiers died, while their surviving comrades fired in all directions. The walls still bear witness. And so does all of Italy: the Nazi vengeance the following day in the Ardeatine Caves claimed the lives of 335 people — 10 for every German killed. Both episodes have since filled history books and collective memory. But three years ago, they were rewritten.

Seguir leyendo

One of the most valued skills in a trader is the ability to identify an undervalued asset with the potential to appreciate. At least in that respect, Mauricio Novelli deserves the award he boasts on his company’s website: Champion of the Americas in the 2024 World Trading Championship. Novelli approached Javier Milei during the Covid pandemic and offered him a helping hand when the libertarian economist was going through a rough patch. He had lost his job and, according to his own account, had to choose between buying quality food for his dog Conan, or eating well himself. Novelli, now 30, contacted him via Instagram to propose offering online courses through his own fledgling firm, N&W Professional Traders. Milei, who had decided to live on pizza, began receiving a monthly fee in both pesos and dollars, according to records from Novelli’s cellphone, which came under investigation following the $Libra cryptocurrency scandal.

Seguir leyendo
<img src="https://images.english.elpais.com/resizer/v2/5MMEASGCRVAW3OFKQGFW2MWWRU.jpg?auth=6528c90117be5579b0763bb383d871e79fd594a29a09a045a9eb39d731d1b73b" width="397" height="265" alt="Mauricio Novelli in an undated photograph.

At the end of the day, we should be grateful for Donald Trump’s obscene imperialism when he says he will be “having the honor of taking Cuba” because “he can do whatever he wants whenever he wants.” This level of shamelessness destroys the rhetorical refuges of minor political actors, who have nowhere to hide in the face of the usurper’s frivolities and humiliating antics. There is something primal, unrefined, in Trump’s cruelty, surely because through him the unconscious of capitalism is expressed. In this role of a Goyaesque figure unleashed, of betrayer of a techno-Christian colonization project, only Javier Milei goes further. Just a few days ago, in his speech before the Córdoba Stock Exchange, the Argentine president went so far as to ask why the Creator had given the planet to humankind, if not to destroy it.

Seguir leyendo

In 1950, the renowned U.S. diplomat and strategist George F. Kennan — remembered as the architect of the so‑called containment doctrine against the Soviet Union — sent a memorandum to the secretary of state with a stark warning: the United States needed to adopt a much tougher stance toward regions where communist sympathies were growing. In particular, he argued that Washington had to strongly assert its status as a great power, making clear that the countries of Latin America needed the U.S. far more than the U.S. needed them. And that, if they did not cooperate, they would be disciplined. With Donald Trump back in the White House for a second time, that logic of domination and discipline appears to have found new life. And, as Argentine sociologist Juan Gabriel Tokatlian, 72, a specialist in international relations, warns, it is beginning to translate into concrete actions.

Seguir leyendo

José Antonio Kast assumed the presidency of Chile on Wednesday afternoon, becoming the most right-wing head of state since the return to democracy in 1990. In his opening address of the parliamentary year, while insulting and mocking opposition legislators, Milei alluded to an alleged conspiracy involving members of his government to try to overthrow him — and with a rather unsubtle gesture, he seemed to point to Villarruel, seated behind him. Later, other spokespeople for the far right made the accusation explicit: they accused the vice president of being a “coup plotter,” of “working for the opposition,” and of betting on the “government’s failure.” Villarruel responded by asserting that the Casa Rosada (the presidential palace) is seeking her resignation, “but I’m not going to give to them,” while criticizing the far-right administration over various corruption cases.

Seguir leyendo

One of these pillars, which withstood the onslaught of previous right-wing governments, is labor legislation, whose foundations date back to 1974. This week, the Senate is poised to pass a labor reform that modifies 200 articles of the Employment Contract Law, rendering it unrecognizable. Unlike the attempts made by former presidents Carlos Menem, Fernando de la Rúa, and Mauricio Macri, Milei faces weakened and discredited unions. Also working in his favor is a labor market that has already fragmented and shifted because of technological change and more than a decade of economic stagnation.

Seguir leyendo

It doesn’t erupt suddenly: first, it’s a mild, almost imperceptible fever. Then, it spreads, mutates, becomes contagious. Finally, it settles in, like the climate. It ceases to be alarming, because it has become commonplace. “We’re in the most developed phase of the epidemic,” says Franco Delle Donne, an Argentine researcher and author of Epidemia ultra: Del fascismo europeo a Silicon Valley (translated as Extremist Epidemic: From European Fascism to Silicon Valley), a book published in 2025, in which he argues that democratic forces made a grave error in underestimating the far-right outbreaks until they spread... and now, it’s too late.

Seguir leyendo

Flanked by some twenty leaders, none of them were among its major allies, none of the advanced democracies, none of the world’s largest economies. It was an emblem of what Davos has made evident: the deterioration of America’s international standing, the rapid march toward geopolitical suicide that consists of undermining the network of alliances and fomenting resentment through unrestrained abuse and humiliations.

Seguir leyendo
