Qatar, Lula, Zapatero: Who were the key mediators in the release of prisoners in Venezuela?

Former Spanish prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, current Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the government of Qatar played a key role in securing the release of a significant number of political prisoners from the Chavista regime on Thursday. Their mediation efforts were acknowledged by Jorge Rodríguez, head of the Venezuelan National Assembly and until recently Nicolás Maduro’s chief advisor, who made the announcement on Thursday. This success is the culmination of years of secret talks at the highest levels and with the families, who kept hoping for an eventual release.

The head of Venezuela’s National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, announced on Thursday the release of a “significant number” of prisoners, including both Venezuelan citizens and foreigners. Rodríguez, who avoided referring to these individuals as political prisoners, described the move as “a unilateral gesture to reinforce our unwavering decision to consolidate peace in the republic and peaceful coexistence among all, regardless of political, religious, economic, or social differences.”

The United States has welcomed the release and surrender by the Venezuelan Chavista regime of a group of 10 Americans who landed last Friday in Texas, among them a triple murderer, Dahud Hanid Ortiz. The identity of this freed man has been confirmed to EL PAÍS through a source close to the Spanish secret services and another from the Venezuelan NGO Foro Penal, which is dedicated to the defense of political prisoners. This organization, a reference in the field of human rights in Venezuela, warned that among those being released was one who was not a political prisoner. This Tuesday, Foro Penal confirmed to this newspaper that it was referring to Ortiz.
