Instagram and Facebook’s terms of service will be updated on January 1, 2025. LinkedIn’s terms of service were updated on November 20, 2024, X attempted to update its terms without prior notice, and other social networks are likely to follow suit. One common motivation for these changes is to incorporate frameworks for using generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools specific to each platform.

The planet’s biggest job bulletin board has pinned up a sign: content creators welcome. If a few years ago, LinkedIn saw itself as a place where professionals could showcase their resumes and promote their personal brand, that landscape has begun to change. Following in the steps of TikTok and Instagram, LinkedIn is turning into a social network where users can help their content go viral, upload short videos and even share memes. All, of course, in the context of their profession and without dramatically shifting the formal tone that has characterized the platform since it was founded in 2002 in the United States. LinkedIn, which has belonged to Microsoft since 2016, reports that in the last year alone, “creator mode” accounts have risen from 13 to 16 million worldwide.

In November 2019, journalist Kashmir Hill received a tip that a startup called Clearview AI claimed to be able to identify anyone from a picture. Her source said that the company had collected billions of photos from social networks like Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn without telling either the websites or the people involved, and that if you uploaded someone’s photo into the app, it would show you all the websites where that person appeared, plus their complete name and personal information.

“Fresh fruit is always available.” “Recharge your batteries in our coffee corner.” “Pool and foosball area to relax.” “Gym pass included.” Some young companies (and other not-so-young companies operating in creative sectors) include such incentives in their job announcements on LinkedIn. They do not indicate financial rewards, but they do provide an attractive or superfluous package (depending on how you look at it) that can be taken in several ways. The first interpretation has to do with projecting a different work environment as compared to that of large corporations. “To attract young and creative talent, incentives such as coffee corners or fruit trays may sometimes seem superficial, but they are part of a broader offer aimed at creating a pleasant and stimulating work environment. And that means that companies, especially start-ups, are paying more attention to employee well-being by offering amenities,” says Israel Carrasco, a professor in the Human Resources Management master’s degree program at the International University of La Rioja (UNIR) and a Happyforce associate.

Wayfair and Macy’s are cutting thousands of jobs as retail layoffs deepen

Retail layoffs are hitting especially hard this week. Online furniture seller Wayfair is cutting about 1,650 jobs, or 13% of its global workforce. Macy’s is laying off about 3.5% of its total headcount, which amounts to roughly 2,350 employees, and the iconic department store is closing five locations.

When Tinder and LinkedIn overlap: More and more people are looking for work on dating apps

A study from last August of about 1,000 active LinkedIn users concluded that 91% have received inappropriate messages or flirting attempts at least once. 31% of those messages were explicit propositions of sexual or romantic encounters. The platform claims to be completely against this behavior. “LinkedIn is a professional community, and we encourage our members to have meaningful and authentic conversations,” reads a statement from the company. “That includes light-hearted content, as long as it remains professional and does not infringe on our policies for the professional community. Romantic insinuations and any kind of harassment are a violation of our norms.”

US applications for jobless benefits reach highest level since October 2021

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits last week rose to its highest level since October 2021, but the labor market remains one of the healthiest parts of the U.S. economy. The Labor Department reported Thursday that U.S. applications for jobless claims were 261,000 for the week ending June 3, an increase of 28,000 from the previous week’s 233,000. Weekly jobless claims are considered representative of U.S. layoffs.
