The coincidences are striking: the pontiff’s first major public event, near Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium, will happen on the same day and in the same city as one of the Puerto Rican artist’s concerts, which will be held at the Metropolitano stadium, home to Atlético Madrid. And hotels are already starting to rake in the cash, even though there are still two and a half months to go before the events.

Seguir leyendo

Some of the legacies of former Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador are weighing heavily on her successor, and Claudia Sheinbaum has begun to shed some of them. The strained relationship with Spain, with whom Mexico shares strong historical and present-day ties, was one of them. Sheinbaum has gradually shifted toward a conciliatory stance, at the same pace that the European country has abandoned its stubborn refusal to acknowledge any atrocities during the Conquest of the Americas, at the origin of the bilateral tension. The two countries are now experiencing their closest moment in seven years. Sheinbaum has acknowledged the steps taken by Spanish authorities and she has reciprocated: at least for now, the calls for the Spanish monarchy to assume any responsibility for that historical period have ceased. The strategy now is more educational. “It is important that we continue sending many exhibitions, that Mexican anthropologists go to Spain to explain what the great civilizations were like, and that people hear about the arrival of the Spanish,” she said on Monday. Culture restored broken ties, and culture will be the way to deepen understanding.

Seguir leyendo

The moment when at least half of the noses perceive something is when the result is determined. This, subsequently, provides an estimated measurement of the amount of odor in the sample.

Seguir leyendo

Larry Fink is the most powerful person in the financial markets, and that status is granted to him by BlackRock. As chairman and CEO of the world’s largest asset manager, he manages $14 trillion – the sum of all the assets owned by the firm’s individual and institutional investors. His business card opens any door. Political leaders, central bankers, regulators and businesspeople all want to hear from “the man behind the curtain,” as the business writer William D. Cohan called Fink in a comparison that references The Wizard of Oz. Indeed, his influence is highly coveted: unseen, yet pervasive. Fink, 73, was in Madrid last week, as part of a European tour. After meeting with clients at the Hotel Santo Mauro, the California-born financier gave an exclusive interview to EL PAÍS at the private Monteverdi club.

Seguir leyendo

Mexico and Spain are moving toward a thaw after seven years of diplomatic tensions and one year of displays of goodwill. The trail of gestures by Spanish authorities, which their Mexican counterparts have been taking note of, culminated this Monday with the Spanish monarch’s acknowledgment of the “abuses” committed during the colonization of the Americas by the conquistadors. This rapprochement by Felipe VI — unthinkable when former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent him a letter demanding accountability for the atrocities committed against Indigenous peoples during that period — marks a turning point. It reverses, at least partially, the rift that opened in 2019. Spain has been softening its position, from a complete refusal to make any concessions, to the king’s recent statements, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has welcomed the shift. In the current international scenario, with Donald Trump exerting pressure on Mexico from the north, it is also in her government’s best interest to achieve a de-escalation and secure a firm ally with whom it shares fundamental historical and commercial ties.

Seguir leyendo

This perception cannot be understood without observing how the live music industry operates today: “sold out” is an internal advertising tool within the music industry. In Madrid, the most paradigmatic example is the Movistar Arena (formerly the WiZink Center), which has operated as a modular venue for years. Although its maximum capacity is around 17,000 people, it allows for configurations starting at just over 3,500 spectators and other intermediate sizes of between 5,000 and 10,000. In these latter configurations, tickets sell out, but the building, in physical terms, is far from full. Promoter and event programmer Javier Domínguez (Madrid, 43 years old), better known as Ferrara, sums it up like this: “They try to sell an image of constant growth to justify numbers that often do not correspond to the reality of the artist.”

Seguir leyendo
