When any foreign leader hinted to him that it might be time to leave power, he answered with a single word: “Never.” The police and intelligence services under his command detained thousands of people who had taken to the streets to protest the electoral fraud that Chavismo had perpetrated in plain view of the world. Protesters had pulled down bronze statues of Hugo Chávez across the country. Prisons were overflowing. The nation was on the brink of rebellion or a bloodbath — or both.

Seguir leyendo

The reinstitutionalization of Venezuela — which has been so widely discussed in recent weeks — remains to be seen. Fears are growing about a superficial change, where everything changes so that nothing actually changes. The official commitment to holding presidential elections remains vague. The country is still waiting for economic improvements. The early political overtures don’t seem – for the moment – to be sufficient. Opposition politicians don’t trust President Delcy Rodríguez’s intentions, while reluctance persists in some sectors of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). New scandals are emerging: more political prisoners have died in official custody, in a murky context that has generated widespread shock.

Seguir leyendo

Not because there’s any shortage of them, but because expressing one has carried a very high cost. During Nicolás Maduro’s final years in power, polling stopped altogether. Some pollsters had to go into hiding, and people began responding to any political question with “don’t know” or “no answer.”

Seguir leyendo

Watching her travel the world to meet with leaders in Europe, with businesspeople in California, or give interviews on YouTube, many may conclude that María Corina Machado, 58, is a leader in limbo, trapped in a situation that prevents her from returning to Venezuela. There, the mission she set for herself still awaits: carrying through the task of removing the Chavista regime from power. According to that view, every day she spends abroad is a gain for the siblings Delcy and Jorge Rodríguez, Venezuelan president and speaker of the National Assembly, respectively, and for strongman Diosdado Cabello —and rising pressure from the millions of Venezuelans waiting for her. But that is not the impression she conveys in person.

Seguir leyendo

On a Saturday evening, in an upscale Caracas neighborhood, a bar fills up. Well-dressed men, smelling of cologne, recount their week. Women with sleek hair and long eyelashes take selfies in the bathroom. People on the street talk on their cell phones, engaging in heated discussions about current events, while a DJ spins vinyl records. There are signature cocktails being served. Everything is in its usual place.

Seguir leyendo

Laws, such as those governing hydrocarbons or mining, are being rapidly reformed to facilitate the inflow of foreign capital; anti-imperialist Chavismo maintains constant contact with Washington; an amnesty law has been passed, freeing thousands of prisoners — though some remain incarcerated or lack full political freedom — and Maduro’s name is beginning to fade amid more immediate crises. Jorge Rodríguez (Barquisimeto, age 60), president of Venezuela’s National Assembly and the country’s second-highest-ranking official after his sister, President Delcy Rodríguez, prefers the term she coined — “a new political moment” — to describe current events rather than speaking of a transition.

Seguir leyendo

Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced on Wednesday an increase in the minimum wage — the first so far this decade. She did not specify the size of the raise, describing it only as “responsible,” and said it would take effect on May 1. Rodríguez is trying to ease growing discontent after the hopes of an economic recovery sparked by the January 3 U.S. intervention failed to materialize in people’s pockets. With a march called for Thursday in Caracas to demand economic relief, Rodríguez again invoked her administration’s commitment to “president Hugo Chávez’s spirit of social justice.”

Seguir leyendo

A new legal development in a New York court reveals a possible collaboration between the lawyers representing the government of acting Venezuelan president Delcy Rodríguez and attorneys working for the opposition that controlled the National Assembly in 2015. The key is that these opposition members, represented by Juan Guaidó, took control of some of Venezuela’s assets in the United States in 2019, when Donald Trump was in his first term as U.S. president and did not recognize Nicolás Maduro during Venezuela’s presidential crisis of 2019-2023.
