It had been almost a century since the country had such a young person at the helm of the department. For Velasco, 38, this position is the latest step in a meteoric political career that officially began in 2018, when Marcelo Ebrard, now Secretary of Economy but then Foreign Secretary under Andrés Manuel López Obrador, brought him on as Director of Social Communication. Since then, Velasco has served as Director General for North America, Unit Chief and Undersecretary. Now he takes over at the top of the department from Juan Ramón de la Fuente, who is stepping down due to health issues.

Seguir leyendo

Businesses such as barbershops and dog groomers in Veracruz have requested donations of clean, dry hair to remove traces of crude oil from the ocean. The plan involves using the hair to create nets that will act as barriers to block the flow of the fuel and absorb what is dispersed in the sea. According to the civil organization Ayudando Patitas (Helping Paws), one kilogram of hair can clean up to eight liters of oil.

Seguir leyendo

Eating meat is an essential part of identity for people in the Mexican state of Nuevo León. “It is the pretext for getting together, for seeing the nieces and nephews, for having visitors over. And of course, for a beer,” he says. For this grill expert, an asado can’t be without the salsa borracha, the Argentinian chorizo, the onions, the roasted potatoes, and the most important factor: soccer. With the World Cup around the corner, this everyday tradition will become a cultural experience for the half-million visitors who officials are predicting will make their way to the city. “Mexico [City] has its museums and Guadalajara, mariachi music and tequila, but here, there are carnita asada and Nuevo León hospitality, which is con madre [the best],” Ramírez says proudly.

Seguir leyendo

The site of this spill is one of the locations where the Mexican government has placed the origin of an oil spill that has already affected over 370 miles (600 km) of coastline.

In early March, the first alerts were raised that tar slicks were washing up on several beaches in the states of Veracruz and Tabasco, staining the flora and killing the fauna. Until now, authorities had maintained the version given by state authorities in Veracruz, namely that it was a spill from a ship belonging to a company not associated with the state oil company Pemex. But on Tuesday, during her daily press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that an interdisciplinary group had been formed with environmental and energy sector authorities, as well as the Mexican Navy, to determine “the cause of the spill” and “whether there is still a leak, or if it was just a one-off incident.” That same day, according to the president, she had received reports on the matter from Pemex and the Navy.

Seguir leyendo

Mexico and Spain are moving toward a thaw after seven years of diplomatic tensions and one year of displays of goodwill. The trail of gestures by Spanish authorities, which their Mexican counterparts have been taking note of, culminated this Monday with the Spanish monarch’s acknowledgment of the “abuses” committed during the colonization of the Americas by the conquistadors. This rapprochement by Felipe VI — unthinkable when former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent him a letter demanding accountability for the atrocities committed against Indigenous peoples during that period — marks a turning point. It reverses, at least partially, the rift that opened in 2019. Spain has been softening its position, from a complete refusal to make any concessions, to the king’s recent statements, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has welcomed the shift. In the current international scenario, with Donald Trump exerting pressure on Mexico from the north, it is also in her government’s best interest to achieve a de-escalation and secure a firm ally with whom it shares fundamental historical and commercial ties.

Seguir leyendo
