The economic and tourism expectations being generated are equally enormous. FIFA estimates an economic impact exceeding $11 billion, while Mexico anticipates the arrival of some 5.5 million visitors, primarily to the host cities of Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. Working within this colossal framework is Gabriela Cuevas (Mexico City, 46 years old), appointed a year ago by President Claudia Sheinbaum as Mexico’s representative for the tournament. “I want to organize the best World Cup in history,” she states in an interview with EL PAÍS. She clarifies, however, that her role is not that of an all-powerful director, but rather a mediator between institutions as diverse as FIFA, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), government agencies such as customs, immigration, and airports, as well as the three host cities.

Seguir leyendo

Cumbia is Mario Alberto Alfaro’s passion. The 52-year-old is a member of a collective that keeps this musical genre – which originates from Colombia’s Caribbean coast – alive in La Independencia, a rough neighborhood in Monterrey, Mexico. Alfaro is part of a musical “dynasty” that, since the 1970s, has forged an entire culture around Colombia, a country that has become the stuff of legend in the streets of this industrial Mexican city nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental. Here, cumbia isn’t just a soundtrack amidst hardship. Rather, it’s a way of life that preserves and amplifies the rhythms that fuse African, Indigenous and Spanish culture. “Cumbia is something very special… but it sounds cooler with our tunes,” Alfaro proudly declares. He adds: “For me, it’s the most beautiful thing in the world. Any song you play touches your soul. It’s something magical. And that’s what we strive for here in Monterrey: to preserve it.”

Seguir leyendo

The 2022 World Cup was held in Qatar between November and December, with many matches scheduled at night to avoid the extreme heat. The next World Cup, set for 2026, will take place in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, between June and July. However, a biometeorological report published in Scientific Reports warns that many of the venues in 2026 face a high risk of excessive heat. In three of the venues, extreme heat stress could persist well into the afternoon, potentially reaching temperatures of up to 50ºC (122ºF). In the context of climate change, the report’s authors argue that measures will be needed to protect players from decreased performance or, in the worst case, health issues. Looking ahead to 2030, the World Cup will be held during the summer in countries like Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, which are also known for their high summer temperatures.

Seguir leyendo
