For ours, the Californian director showed up with photo books that explore the landscapes of Georgia, where the plot of May December takes place. But none of them made reference to the plot’s real elephant in the room, the fact that the film centers on a real-life event in the United States that met with a media storm. The case involved a teacher and one of her underage students. Sex, jail, childbirth and death was to follow. “All my countrymen remember it,” he explains with a rogue smile.

‘May December’: I’m not even curious

From the get-go, May December had several things going for it. Like seeing Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, actresses as good as she is disturbing, acting together for the first time. Portman had an impact on me in Leon, the Professional and I fell in love with her in Beautiful Girls. Intelligent and beautiful, her career has gone from strength to strength. As far as I’m concerned, she is a must-see, regardless of the quality of the film she’s in. She is someone I always enjoy watching.

During the last few years, the Golden Globes faced criticism for the lack of ethnic diversity among the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the group that founded and produced the awards ceremony. In 2021, a boycott led by media companies, actors and other creatives, caused the ceremony to be held privately and without a television broadcast. Although the 2022 ceremony seemed a return to normalcy, the HFPA eventually disbanded, and was purchased by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries, in turn owned by the billionaire Todd Boehly, who now are the organizers of the event.

The Gredes are not mentioned until the article’s third paragraph, which discusses the brand’s thriving numbers: “Founded in late 2019, Skims earned $500 million last year, 25% more than projected and 80% more than it earned in 2021, up 90% from the year before. So far, 2023 has been a weak year for underwear sales but a buoyant one for Skims. CEO Jens Grede, who co-founded the company with his wife Emma and [Kim] Kardashian, says its intimate apparel sales were up 86% year over year.”

How deepfake technology has spread across the world: ‘We can all be victims. The internet is a jungle’

Deepfakes — hyper-realistic reproductions that artificial intelligence has taken to unprecedented limits of accessibility and dissemination — are everywhere, as evidenced by the case of the AI-generated nude photos of teenagers circulating in the Badajoz province of Spain this week. “We can all be victims. The internet is a jungle. There is no control and it is not a game: it is a crime,” says Maribel Rengel, the president of the Extremadura federation of parents of students, Freapa. The most cited report on the phenomenon, published by Deeptrace in 2019, traced up to half a million fake files on the internet, with a growth rate in the number of deepfake videos online of almost 100% since the company previously released data. But this is only the work of one entity, and the real volume is unclear. What is known is that 96% of deepfake videos are related to pornography and that these creations have now leapt from image to voice, text, documents, and facial recognition, or a combination of all of these, to become one of the most worrying emerging vectors of fraud in an as-yet unregulated technology.

Natalie Portman: ‘Human beings need to be told stories’

In 1996, the relationship between Mary Kay Letourneau, a 34-year-old Seattle school teacher who was married with four children, and her 12-year-old student, Vili Fualaau, of Samoan descent, made headlines around the world. The scandal broke out when Letourneau became pregnant, and it was discovered that the two were in a sexual relationship. Letourneau’s husband divorced her and took their four children to Alaska. This triggered a chain of events: Vili Fualaau’s parents sued her and a trial was held. The sentence was light — only three months in prison — but it would be harsher if Letourneau saw her student again. After giving birth to a girl, she finished serving her sentence and was let out of jail. But one early morning in February 1998, police discovered her with the student in a car. A month later, she announced that she was pregnant again. She was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison, and had her second daughter with Fualaau behind bars. She did not leave prison until 2004.
