In addition to the growing street protests across the country and the debates in the U.S. Congress, the battle against Donald Trump’s immigration agenda is being fought on a logistical front. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is struggling to find space for the thousands of detainees it has overcrowded in its detention centers.

The most dramatic changes took place on January 20, the day Donald Trump returned to the White House with the promise that he would carry out the largest deportation campaign in history. Through executive orders and other measures, the Republican president has launched a war on due process. “These are definitely dark times,” Stump says in her office near downtown Oklahoma City, the capital of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma executed a man Thursday who claimed he acted in self-defense when he shot and killed two men in Oklahoma City in 2001. Phillip Dean Hancock, 59, received a three-drug lethal injection at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and was declared dead at 11:29 a.m. His execution went forward once Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt declined to commute his sentence, despite a clemency recommendation from the state’s Pardon and Parole Board.

The number of US mass killings linked to extremism over the past decade was at least three times higher than the total from any other 10-year period since the 1970s, according to a report by the Anti-Defamation League. The report, provided to The Associated Press ahead of its public release Thursday, also found that all extremist killings identified in 2022 were linked to right-wing extremism, with an especially high number linked to white supremacy. They include a racist mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, that left 10 Black shoppers dead and a mass shooting that killed five people at an LGBT nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
