It had been almost a century since the country had such a young person at the helm of the department. For Velasco, 38, this position is the latest step in a meteoric political career that officially began in 2018, when Marcelo Ebrard, now Secretary of Economy but then Foreign Secretary under Andrés Manuel López Obrador, brought him on as Director of Social Communication. Since then, Velasco has served as Director General for North America, Unit Chief and Undersecretary. Now he takes over at the top of the department from Juan Ramón de la Fuente, who is stepping down due to health issues.

Seguir leyendo

El Mencho’s hitmen even strapped dynamite to their rivals’ bodies to make them explode while still alive.

Seguir leyendo

The downfall of El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, after decades of eluding security forces, occurred during an operation in the mountains of the state of Jalisco carried out by Mexican authorities with intelligence support from the United States, underscoring the strong cooperation both governments — especially Mexico’s — have highlighted over the past year.

Seguir leyendo

What goes on inside Mexican prisons spills over the walls. This is not only due to its impact on the country’s security, but also on relations with the United States. In the last year, Mexico has transferred 92 prisoners to the U.S., where they are also wanted by the justice system for organized crime offenses. Mexico has justified this move as a sovereign decision that “benefits national security,” given the evidence that they continued to operate for criminal groups from behind bars. Federal Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch has emphasized that these prisoners — transferred within a vague and controversial legal framework — were directing criminal activity from their cells and extorting Mexican citizens through phone calls. “Unfortunately, within prisons, they often form alliances with other groups, and in various locations where they are incarcerated, they have the opportunity to continue committing crimes. This is for the benefit of our country,” he argued to the press, hinting at the persistent problems of lack of control within the national prison system.

Seguir leyendo

In just 24 hours, all eyes have once again turned to Sinaloa. The shooting attack in the state capital against two Movimiento Ciudadano (Citizens’ Movement, MC) lawmakers and the kidnapping of 10 miners in the south of the Mexican city are the latest proof that the violence shows no signs of letting up. For more than a year, Sinaloa has caught in the crossfire of an internal war between factions of organized crime. The trigger — the alleged betrayal of veteran kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada — coincided almost exactly with the start of Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, which made the Sinaloa powder keg one of the top priorities of its security strategy.

Seguir leyendo

The latest transfer of Mexican drug lords to the United States represents a further escalation in the bilateral security relationship. Less than a year ago, Donald Trump, through a presidential decree, added six cartels to the State Department’s list of international terrorist organizations. Since then, 92 inmates have been sent across the border, including some historical kingpins with decades-long outstanding debts to U.S. justice, as well as heavyweights from today’s most powerful cartels. But Tuesday’s transfer carries even greater significance because it symbolizes the consolidation of the new playing field imposed by Trump. Among the 27 prisoners transferred is the first person indicted by U.S. prosecutors for the crime of narcoterrorism, in addition to a handful of names that extend beyond the six criminal organizations included on the blacklist.

Seguir leyendo

In 2020, during the final stretch of Donald Trump’s first term as U.S. president, Washington was already sounding the alarm about the fentanyl epidemic among its population and the phenomenon’s connection to Mexican cartels. At that time, the U.S. indicated that criminal organizations were manufacturing the synthetic opioid from precursors shipped from China and demanded stronger action from Mexico to contain the problem. The Mexican government’s campaign against the drug began during Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s presidency, but the results were not immediately tangible as the number of overdose deaths in the United States multiplied, reaching almost 74,000 in 2022. It wasn’t until 2024-2025, between López Obrador’s departure and the first year of Claudia Sheinbaum’s presidency, that the government campaign intensified and managed to reverse the tragic trend. For the first time in years, the trafficking of fentanyl into the U.S., and overdose deaths related to the drug, have decreased.

Seguir leyendo

The Mexican government has dealt another blow to drug trafficking. In separate operations across three states—Sinaloa, Sonora, and Guerrero—authorities reported the seizure of more than 41,000 liters and 12 tons of chemicals to be used in drug production. The announcement includes the dismantling of a clandestine laboratory in Guerrero and 11 other methamphetamine production sites in Sonora. In Sonora, between the towns of Culiacán and Mexicali, a vehicle containing 212 kilograms of methamphetamine was seized by the Army and the National Guard.

The bodies of Stephanie and Susej were what exposed the cesspool. The two young Venezuelan women had been brutally murdered in July 2024 in southern Mexico City. Their attackers had tried to burn them to cover their tracks, but the double femicide left no doubt: it bore the mark of the Tren de Aragua criminal organization. In the wake of the crime, investigations and news reports about the Venezuelan gang followed. And arrests began. Although the Mexico City Security Secretariat tried to downplay its role, police operations proved that this criminal network, after spreading across the continent, was already operating in Mexico. The most recent arrests have gone a step further and are revealing how La Unión Tepito, a Mexico City cartel, has profited from the sexual exploitation carried out by Tren de Aragua in the heart of the country.

Seguir leyendo

The executive branch is rapidly accumulating power, thanks to key changes at the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) and the groundwork laid in previous months, primarily the National Intelligence Center (CNI) and the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) of the Ministry of Finance. However, the challenge is immense. Criminals and gangs are increasingly sophisticated in their disguises and protections, while simultaneously strengthening their connections to those in power. Now, criminal organizations are masquerading as unions or using legitimate organizations to exploit the legal economy, leaving citizens and business owners in precarious situations.

Seguir leyendo

Four truck drivers left the Mexican city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, bound for Oaxaca on November 18. Their families say they were traveling together and that the last time they spoke with them was two days later, when they were in the municipality of Matías Romero, on their way to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. They have been unaccounted for ever since. Authorities have issued missing persons alerts. To date, only the whereabouts of the trucks are known, but the drivers have not been found.
