French President Emmanuel Macron has been receiving attacks from Donald Trump for months, or rather for years. These attacks have also been personal: about his wife, his supposedly soft character, NATO… But you have to pick your battles. There were two ways to approach the issue: by trading blows or dodging them. The French head of state used diplomacy to steer the relationship where Europe needed it to secure certain fronts, especially concerning the war in Ukraine. This G-7 summit will put that strategy to the test. In particular, the state dinner that France will host with Trump at Versailles to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Seguir leyendo

The European Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a joint project led by France and Germany with participation from Spain, has failed because of disagreements between Airbus, the German representative, and Dassault, the French firm. It was the most ambitious European project at a time when the EU says it wants to increase and coordinate military spending to develop shared defense technologies, programs, and platforms — like the one that collapsed on Monday, June 8. What happened with FCAS casts doubt on whether Europe can ever reconcile national sovereignty with the demands of building next-generation, complex weapons systems, at a moment when the EU is trying to bolster its defense sovereignty and the United States is beginning to withdraw its security umbrella. It also adds pressure and lessons for other projects trying to move forward.

Seguir leyendo

In 1861, the photographer Félix Nadar historically immersed himself in the catacombs of Paris, the vast network of tunnels in which rest the remains of some six million people. Used as an ossuary since the end of the 18th century, it makes use of the nearly 190 miles of galleries below the capital resulting from limestone extraction. In so doing, it put an end to problems with the over-saturation of cemeteries (in addition to their foul odors, the city was still expanding), and Napoleonic France repurposed the morgue into a monumental work of funereal art, opening it to the public in 1809. Under the tutelage of the engineer Héricart de Thury, who decorated and designed its walls with rows of bones, symbols and plaques indicating their cemetery of origin, the catacombs are replete with literary inscriptions, presided over by the Dantesque “Stop! This is the Empire of the Dead” at its entrance in the city’s 14th arrondissement, the official start of its tours.

Seguir leyendo

Two meters away, a handwritten sign proclaims a symbolic victory: “Here begins the new France.” From the window of the new mayor’s office, painted electric blue, one can see the basilica where the remains of the monarchs of France rest. But also the narrow streets of Saint-Denis (population 115,000), where the air is thick with the aroma of halal shops, and women in headscarves walk among mosques. In short, the multicultural landscape of the second-largest city in Île-de-France, the Paris region, located in the country’s poorest department and the one with the highest proportion of immigrants — one-third of the population.

The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) — the nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers that Donald Trump abandoned in 2018 — achieved in its three years of full implementation what neither threats, nor war, nor even Saturday’s brief peace negotiations in Islamabad have managed to accomplish now. Back then, after 10 years of European mediation, two years of negotiations, and the signing of that pact, Tehran opened its nuclear facilities to a strict regime of international inspections, eliminated 97% of its highly enriched uranium stockpile, and committed to not enriching that mineral above 3.75% (the level necessary to produce electricity, but not nuclear weapons), in exchange for relief from international sanctions.

Seguir leyendo

I am very worried,” Taghi Rahmani (Qazvin, 67), husband of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, told EL PAÍS from Paris in a telephone conversation. Mohammadi was sentenced on February 7 to seven and a half years in prison for the crimes of assembly, conspiracy, and propaganda. This sentence adds to the numerous convictions accumulated by the Iranian activist of Kurdish origin, who has been tireless in her struggle for women’s rights since the 1990s. For years, the Islamic Republic has tried to silence her by repeatedly arresting and sentencing her. But, Rahmani clarifies: “Her commitment to the people of Iran is unbreakable. No matter how many times she is arrested, she dreams of freedom for Iranians and feels a responsibility to the people and to democracy,” her husband affirmed a few days after the new sentence was handed down.

Seguir leyendo

Gisèle Pelicot would set the breakfast table before going to bed. The honey, the napkins, the plates, the jars of jam. The next day, she would only have to get out the butter and make the toast while the smell of coffee filled the kitchen of the small house where she lived with her husband. It was more convenient, of course. But over time — and perhaps this is one of the few symptoms that emerged unconsciously while everything was happening — she realized that this habit could be a mechanism for mentally skipping bedtime. His great success, and also his own decline. After nine years as head of state of France, he has gone through practically every phase. Today, after a period riddled with political crises, he is entering the final stretch of his term. Weakened internally, he has decided to focus on his role as an international leader and staunch opponent of the new U.S. imperialism, ending his adventure as he began it with his famous Sorbonne speech. That is to say, by invoking the urgent need for European sovereignty. “It is time for Europe to wake up, to emerge from its status as a geopolitical minority. If we do not decide for ourselves, we will be swept away,” he said in an interview at the Élysée Palace with EL PAÍS and a group of six international newspapers, addressing some of the points he will propose at the informal meeting of EU leaders on Thursday, focused on revitalizing the EU economy.

Seguir leyendo
