Sherwin, the director presents a little-known fact about the father of the atomic bomb. In the opening scenes of the film, Nolan presents the character as a young, anxious student working with experimental physicist Patrick Blackett at Cambridge University. After being mocked by Blackett in one of his classes, the then-student takes one of the teacher’s apples and injects it with cyanide. He later regrets his decision and narrowly prevents visiting scientist Niels Bohr from eating it.

Seguir leyendo

Last week, Cillian Murphy, 47, received his first Oscar nomination for his role in Oppenheimer. He was surprised by the announcement while having tea with his wife and parents. For that same work, he already won the Golden Globe for Best Actor a few weeks ago. But for the majority of the public, Murphy is still the bloodthirsty Thomas Shelby from the successful Peaky Blinders TV series. And, for those who have never seen one of his movies, he’s a meme.

Seguir leyendo

Germany, and not Japan, could very well have been the first country to suffer a nuclear attack in the final stretch of World War II. In 1945, the United States considered using the atomic bomb on a German city to hasten the surrender of the Third Reich, as recalled and explored in a very interesting alternative history exhibition at the German Historical Museum (DHM) in Berlin. The political and moral consequences of that decision would have profoundly changed the history of Germany and the world — would West Germany have aligned itself with the Atlantic Alliance, would German guilt for the Holocaust have carried the same weight? The failure of Adolf Hitler’s last-ditch counteroffensive in the Ardennes (December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945) and the fortuitous capture on March 7, 1945 of the Remagen Bridge intact — “the miracle of Remagen” — which offered the Allies an unexpected passage over the Rhine, the crossing of which was expected to be extremely difficult, were decisive, the exhibition points out, in Washington not resorting to the atomic bomb, as these events shortened the war in Europe.

Seguir leyendo

Someone should resurrect the guillotine in France. In September, the French committee that selected its Oscar representative made a notorious decision. It passed over the Palme d’Or Anatomy of a Fall and opted for Tran Anh Hung’s clumsy movie, The Taste of Things. Even the Golden Globes — presented last night in another celebration of alcohol and sushi at the Beverly Hills Hotel — have exposed the error: Justine Triet’s courtroom drama took home the award for best non-English language film and for best script, in what was the big surprise of the night.

Seguir leyendo

In 2021, a boycott led by media companies, actors and other creatives, caused the ceremony to be held privately and without a television broadcast.

The Nobel Prize winners in science that were recently announced include two women. If that seems trivial to you, it’s because you don’t know the history of the 20th century, but let’s take this one step at a time. The two honored scientists are Katalin Karikó, for the Covid vaccines that have saved millions of lives, and Anne L’Huillier, for an acute look into the interior of the atom whose applications we cannot even imagine. It is true that the statistics are depressing. Karikó is only the 13th woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine since the award was founded in 1901, and L’Huillier is only the fifth to win the Nobel Prize in Physics. But it is also true that the trend is on the right track, because most of these researchers have been honored in recent years. Something is moving in Stockholm.

Seguir leyendo

Grayscale versus bright pink. Nolan versus Gerwig. Two antithetical films force the viewer to choose between the adult drama of dispatches and ethical dilemmas and the escapist feminist fantasy. Despite the clichés about its testosterone levels, Oppenheimer is much more than a biopic about the American physicist (played by Cillian Murphy) who ended up becoming the father of the atomic bomb. The thriller also narrates his tortuous relationship with psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, the most influential woman in Oppenheimer’s life, played by Florence Pugh. The young intellectual rebelled against the social conventions that restricted women at the time. Her early death is still the subject of theories and conspiracies today. Although many have tried to reduce her role to that of a mere mistress, the facts say otherwise. This is her tragic story.

Seguir leyendo

Yugoslavia’s postgraduate physics summer schools were very much to the liking of us young PhDs in 1980. The Adriatic stretched out before John, Dora, and myself. Although our meetings were sporadic, we always liked each other. There were three topics in our conversations. Dora’s favorite was the political situation in Spain. John’s was my work on reactions between heavy cores. Mine was, avoiding as much as possible any delicate allusions, to inquire about some of the intricacies of the Manhattan Project, of which I knew John was one of the leading experts. John loosened up a bit at Dora’s blank stare and after a while of listening to him raptly, I asked the fatal question: “What was Robert Oppenheimer like?” John’s everlasting smile was barely dulled, but Dora gave me a serious look, then smiled, got up and ruffled my hair before walking away. I apologized to John (Robert Huizenga) and was sorry to lose the company of his young wife, Dorothy Koeze.

Seguir leyendo

It can be ascribed to Albert Einstein, who wrote the most famous equation in history, E=mc2, in 1905, showing the world that a small amount of matter (m) could be transformed into an enormous amount of energy (E) when multiplied by the square of the speed of light (c2), a gigantic number. Or it might be attributed to Leo Szilard, the eccentric Hungarian physicist who visited Einstein on Long Island in 1939 and convinced him that the Nazis could get their hands on the Belgian Congo’s abundant uranium reserves. Or perhaps credit should go to Alexander Sachs, the Lehman Brothers economist who immediately understood that, if it was possible to design a weapon with the destructive power predicted by those physicists, the United States should build it. And, of course, there’s president Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who took all of the above seriously and financed the Manhattan Project to create the deadly device.

Seguir leyendo
