It’s the one where Homer Simpson gives his wife, Marge, a bowling ball with his name etched on it. One of the last sketches of the year on Saturday Night Live captures a Christmas scene that many will find familiar: while each member of the family receives expensive and heartfelt gifts, the mother only gets a bathrobe. In fact, Diana Oliver, recently writing in this newspaper about the unequal burden on men and women during Christmas, recounted the case of a 46-year-old woman from Madrid named Marta who said the excitement of the holidays often turns into a burden when it comes to buying gifts. “What exhausts me the most is taking care of all the gifts: checking that there is stock, finding the best prices, managing shipments and making sure that everything arrives on time,” she explained, while clarifying that her partner does not perceive the urgency or the real burden of this job.

Seguir leyendo

There were 40 hours of interviews. But even with 1,500 pages of transcripts, the subject of this documentary didn’t open up about the most mysterious chapters of his life. In fact, he didn’t even tell the crew that he’d been battling cancer for six years. And, in 2023, before filming was even finished, Paul Reubens died. Even so, Pee-wee as Himself (HBO Max) is not an unfinished work, and manages to surprisingly explore the rise to stardom, and the descent into disgrace, of one of America’s most celebrated actors and comedians. A uniquely talented actor who was forced to return to the closet to succeed and who, years later, became an outcast in the industry due to false accusations.

Seguir leyendo

Seven documentaries about comedians recommended on platforms

When Ayo Edebiri, 29, became a massive international star, she was already well-acquainted with the ins and outs of show business. Still shy of 30, she had experience in nearly every role possible, having gotten her start as a production intern and as a stand-out writer for Comedy Central, in addition to racking up co-signs from some of the biggest names in U.S. stand-up. It was much to her surprise that her promising career’s real glow-up came not thanks to her acidic feminist and anti-racist jokes, but rather, a drama about two career chefs obsessed with the pursuit of excellence. In her role on FX’s The Bear alongside co-star Jeremy Allen White, Edebiri brought home the laboral and personal travails of a cook at a small Chicago restaurant. In so doing, she racked up nearly every recognition an actress could hope for. She won an Emmy, a Golden Globe, a Critic’s Choice and a SAG Award. The unanimous admiration for her work placed her in the tiny group of people who had arrived at Hollywood’s highest heights. From then on, her phone hasn’t stopped ringing. Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt is one of her most recent projects to see the light of day, and she also just wrapped filming on the latest installation of The Bear.

Seguir leyendo

Styling

Fabio Immediato

Makeup

Dee Carrion (Paradis NYC)

Hair

Jacob Aaron Dillon (Opus Beauty)

Nails

Naoko Saita

Set design

Maxim Jezek (WSM)

Production

Cristina Serrano

Local production

Cynthia Hadden (Lyric Productions)

Set production

Daniel Scott

Styling assistant

Catalina Cooper

Almost everyone who has made a name for themselves in English-speaking music over the past half-century has graced the set of the veteran NBC comedy show: the Stones, Dylan, McCartney, Harrison, Aretha Franklin, Simon & Garfunkel, Queen, Bowie, Patti Smith, Nirvana, Prince, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish... And there was plenty to choose from. Trump made that assessment at the end of the meeting. That was his conclusion, after cornering the president of a country at war that has lost over 40,000 lives. While he humiliated the leader of Ukraine, Trump was known to be concerned about the quality of the show. The leader of the free world, or a candidate to win Big Brother? With apologies to Big Brother contestants.

Seguir leyendo

“Hi, I’m Chevy Chase and you’re not,” was a phrase popularized by the man himself in 1975. It may have aroused jealousy at the time, but by 2018, The Telegraph was publishing a profile about the performer with the cutting headline “Mean, arrogant, delusional: why did America fall in love with Chevy Chase?” The article claimed that if Bill Cosby (who was being hit by sexual abuse allegations from dozens of women) was the country’s most hated comic, Chase should be a good candidate for runner-up. His offense? A long list of racist insults and homophobic, misogynist, and violent incidents. They took place constantly throughout a career whose beginnings have recently been portrayed by Jason Reitman in Saturday Night, a Saturday Night Live biopic that captures the birth of one of the most iconic programs in U.S. television history. Chase, who was a member of SNL’s original cast, was one of the show’s most conflictive actors. He was also its first star, and its first alumnus to find success in Hollywood.

Seguir leyendo

Singer-songwriter Ingrid Andress has been nominated four times for a Grammy. Like many country artists, she is particularly popular in the U.S. But a performance this week at the MLB (Major League Baseball) Home Run Derby has made her famous around the world, and not in a good way. Her rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner — a key moment for any American artist — was entirely out of tune and was met with boos from the stadium and criticism on social media. Andress apologized on Instagram, confessed she was drunk and announced she is going to check in to rehab. If it’s any consolation to Andress, she’s not the first and won’t be the last music star whose vocal talent has been put to the test when singing the national anthem. More often than not, they have been given a second chance.

Seguir leyendo

Latina comedians have a lot to say, they know how to do it, and they know how to reach U.S. audiences with increasing force. Irony has become their best ally: when you denounce things with humor, people are more receptive to the message. These comedians are talking about just about any issue with self-confidence and without restraint, and the freshness of the topics they address, beyond what is politically correct, have made them gain popularity. This is something that the major platforms have been quick to notice, and they have dedicated special programs to them. Some of the names that stand out are Joanna Hausmann, Melissa Villaseñor, Sofía Niño de Rivera and Cristela Alonzo. But how have these women captivated the American public with their jokes?

Seguir leyendo
