On the streets it is known as the “zombie drug.” Many believe it is a horse tranquilizer. Its scientific name is xylazine and it is a veterinary sedative that is combined with other anesthetics and analgesics for operations on small animals, or in laboratories where rodents are experimented on. An unpublished study has discovered traces of the substance in syringes discarded by heroin and methamphetamine users in the two Mexican cities. If the fentanyl crisis had already taken over northern Baja California and other points along the U.S. border, the arrival of xylazine represents yet another lethal risk to already extremely vulnerable drug addicts whose chances of a fatal overdose have multiplied.

Seguir leyendo

In 1999, he left his small hometown in El Salvador where he lived with his grandparents, and embarked on an arduous 3,100-mile (5,000-kilometer), nine-week journey to the United States. He braved a treacherous boat voyage from Guatemala to Mexico and crossed the suffocating Sonoran Desert on foot to reach Arizona. Accompanied by strangers, entrusted to coyotes and polleros (people smugglers, in English), he journeyed north on boats, trains, buses and trucks. He used fake identities, evaded soldiers, mimicked local accents, and embraced the “migrant” label — a word he had never associated with himself until then. Along the way, some of his fellow travelers perished and vanished, but the boy managed to survive. He aimed to reunite with his parents in California, where they had settled after fleeing their war-torn homeland years ago. Javier Zamora was only nine years old at the time.

Seguir leyendo

Four-year-old Jonzi was one of a group of migrants traveling across the Mexican state of Sonora last Thursday when the vehicles were attacked by an armed commando. The child, who had arrived in Mexico from Ecuador, died on the night of February 15, along with at least two other women. His death had gone unnoticed, added to the large number of missing, kidnapped and deceased migrants attempting to reach the U.S. border that nobody asks about and whose bodies nobody claims. But a New York law firm specializing in migrant issues, 1800Migrante, released a statement based on a witness account that spoke of a “migrant massacre” in Sáric, about 50 miles from the border with Arizona.

Seguir leyendo

Ángel León first noticed zostera marina while sailing in the Bay of Cádiz in Spain. “I saw something floating; it looked like an ear of wheat that had reached the sea. I picked it up, took it to the restaurant and they told me that it was a native plant in which cuttlefish and squid spawn, and that it is very important to the ecosystem of the seabed,” says the chef, who runs the three-Michelin star Aponiente restaurant in Puerto de Santa María. In 2021, after four years of research, he presented his discovery and began developing an ambitious project to produce what he baptized as “sea grain,” which he is increasingly closer to incorporating into his menu. “If all goes well, in two years it will be available at Aponiente all year round. I could already produce enough to last a month and a half, but until I have enough for a whole season, I will not put it on the menu,” he says. León has not been alone on his journey: in addition to his team of researchers, he has worked with the Comcaac people in Mexico, who shared their method of treating this marine plant, which is often called eelgrass.

Seguir leyendo

George Allan Kelly, a 75-year-old Arizona rancher, awaits trial for second-degree murder. The trial, which begins on Monday, will raise the temperature in a region that is already red hot, on the border between Mexico and the United States. On January 30, Kelly says he found the body of a man shot on his property near Kino Springs, a town just yards away from the frontier separating both countries. His defense claims that on that day Kelly heard a shot, then saw a group of men armed with high-powered rifles who were crossing his land without permission. He took an AK-47 rifle and fired a few shots in the air to try to scare them away. But Gabriel Cuen Buitimea, a Mexican migrant from Sonora, fell dead. The Prosecutor’s Office considers it murder.

Seguir leyendo
