In 2013 the renowned Belgian dance company Les Ballets C de la B, led by Alain Platel — and together with the choreographers Hildegard De Vuyst, Koen Augustijnen and Rosalba Torres Guerrero — premiered Badke, a piece performed by Palestinian dancers based on the dabke, a traditional Levantine Arab folk dance. Twelve years later, under the name Badke (remix), the piece has been revisited and choreographed by Amir Sabra and Ata Khatab, who danced in the original production. The choreography, which takes on new meaning in light of Israel’s massacre in Gaza, is the closing act of the 10 Sentidos Festival in the Spanish city of Valencia on Tuesday, May 26. Imprisoned for 11 months by Israel between 2021 and 2022, Khatab was not granted permission to travel to Spain and remains in Ramallah.

Seguir leyendo

This is clearly documented by archival documents: from the late 15th century, this was one of the entry points for enslaved Africans. Just a few meters away, in the now-demolished Posada del Camell, more than a hundred people were sometimes crammed together in chains, waiting to be auctioned off. And yet, there is not a single plaque to commemorate it.

Seguir leyendo

The full title of this native of Spain’s eastern city of Valencia is as long as it is important: Chief Engineering Flight Controller for Guidance, Control, and Proximity and Docking Operations Systems. This means that when things go wrong on board, it’s his team of 70 people, based at NASA’s legendary Mission Control Center in Houston, Texas, who provide answers and recommendations for action, which are then carried out by the operations team. In a videoconference interview with EL PAÍS, he explains what the most critical moments will be during the first crewed mission to the Moon in more than half a century. Beyond the space race with China and the current geopolitical tensions, this will be a “historic” step forward for all of humanity, he asserts.

Seguir leyendo

Just hours before his highly anticipated performance at the Palau de les Arts Auditorium in Valencia, Morrissey cancelled what was to be his first concert in Spain in 10 years on Thursday, claiming he hadn’t been able to sleep a wink the night before.

Seguir leyendo

It was going to be a huge success: the homes would be built on a 500,000 square meter (123-acre) tract of land nestled in the mountains of Alicante, in the Spanish Mediterranean, on the idyllic shore of a water reservoir and close to a friendly village of just 700 residents. The original project, which began in 2006, was dubbed La Joya de Planes (The Jewel of Planes) and envisioned as a large residential development of 435 homes facing the Beniarrés reservoir, a few miles from the existing village of Planes. The plot of land had previously been owned by the family of Esteban González Pons, a politician with Spain’s conservative Popular Party (PP) and a member of the European Parliament between 2014 and 2023. The plot was rezoned and approved for building before the surrounding area received protected status in 2007 due to its high environmental value.

Seguir leyendo
<img src="https://images.english.elpais.com/resizer/v2/6L7Z47QEIRGIFGREICO7KQA4GQ.png?auth=a080f8497bef945fe2398ab6dfe2cf1206d0e659475f7e4f63b27dda25f27cf3" width="1328" height="710" alt="Six modules with different potential designs.

The unthinkable — regulating pedestrian traffic on sidewalks — was first considered by councilman Javier Barbero Gutiérrez a few months before Christmas 2017. For years, Madrid’s city center had been overflowing with people on some weekends. And on long weekends, it was literally packed. The level of congestion on the most popular streets resembled that of a concert, only instead of staying in one place, people moved in different directions. The narrower areas were a potential death trap. Barbero, head of the Health and Safety department, met with the police and a decision was made: on the peak days of December, Preciados Street would be used for going up from Sol, and Carmen Street for going down.

Seguir leyendo

For many years, eating insects has been unthinkable, at least in Western countries. Who would think of putting a caterpillar or a cricket in their mouths? This is in stark contrast to places like Mexico, Colombia, Thailand, Vietnam, Peru, Cambodia, or China, deeply rooted in their culinary traditions since time immemorial. In Asia and Latin America, it’s common to find crispy cockroaches, scorpion skewers, stewed tarantulas, or ant larvae sauce. Entomophagy, as the insect diet is known, is slowly beginning to break down taboos and cross borders.

Seguir leyendo

It’s Thursday morning and Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, 53, arrives at the Miró Room in La Moncloa, the seat of government, dressed in a blue suit and in good spirits. He seems eager to continue the fight. Neither the fierce legal pressure nor the withdrawal of parliamentary support by the Catalan separatist party Junts per Catalunya (Together for Catalonia), announced just an hour earlier, appear to have affected the Socialist Party (PSOE) leader.

A plane crashes into one of the tallest towers in the world. The situation is complete emergency, and employees on numerous floors have to evacuate the building in single file and via the stairs. How would a Hollywood movie portray that scene? Screaming, pushing, heartless people stamping on each other’s heads to save themselves. What happened on September 11, 2001, in New York? The entire building maintained the calm necessary for almost everyone to be saved. The evacuees actively helped each other, carrying injured colleagues or guiding strangers through dark stairwells. In emergency after emergency, this is the norm: extreme selfishness doesn’t emerge, but rather those affected act generously, if not heroically, toward strangers. In crisis situations, such as the massive blackout on the Iberian Peninsula last week, people don’t take a baseball bat to their neighbors, but rather hand them a pack of batteries even though they’ve never exchanged a word. Why do we continue to believe that the opposite is natural?

Seguir leyendo
