In Spain, the US and Argentina, the far right is rewriting the past: ‘Nationalism needs its history’

On Via Rasella, in the heart of Rome, stands a bullet-riddled building. The machine gun fire left so many holes that you can see them with a quick Google Maps search. It was there, on the afternoon of March 23, 1944, in the German-occupied city, that a company of the SS Bozen Regiment was marching when the GAP partisan group detonated two bombs. Thirty-three soldiers died, while their surviving comrades fired in all directions. The walls still bear witness. And so does all of Italy: the Nazi vengeance the following day in the Ardeatine Caves claimed the lives of 335 people — 10 for every German killed. Both episodes have since filled history books and collective memory. But three years ago, they were rewritten.

Rift between Javier Milei and his vice president deepens with accusations of coup-mongering and corruption

The conflict between Javier Milei and his vice president, Victoria Villarruel, continues to escalate. In his opening address of the parliamentary year, while insulting and mocking opposition legislators, Milei alluded to an alleged conspiracy involving members of his government to try to overthrow him — and with a rather unsubtle gesture, he seemed to point to Villarruel, seated behind him. Later, other spokespeople for the far right made the accusation explicit: they accused the vice president of being a “coup plotter,” of “working for the opposition,” and of betting on the “government’s failure.” Villarruel responded by asserting that the Casa Rosada (the presidential palace) is seeking her resignation, “but I’m not going to give to them,” while criticizing the far-right administration over various corruption cases.

Javier Milei has overturned Argentina’s historic claim to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands and acknowledged the right of the “Malvinenses” — as he recognized the archipelago’s inhabitants — to choose their nationality. On Veterans and Fallen Day, which commemorates the war that pitted Argentina against the United Kingdom 43 years ago, the far-right president decided not to participate in the main homage. Instead of traveling to Tierra del Fuego, where Vice President Victoria Villarruel — a political rival of his — had traveled, Milei stayed in Buenos Aires and led a brief ceremony, surrounded by officials and a vast police deployment. The speech he delivered generated widespread criticism for weakening national demands to recover the islands.

Milei lowers age for gun possession in Argentina by decree

In line with the preaching of the global far right, the government of Javier Milei is moving forward with the deregulation of access to firearms in Argentina. Last Monday, the president decreed a reduction in the minimum age for being a user: without any debate or the participation of Congress, Milei decided to lower the requirement from 21 to 18 years of age. At a time when high-ranking officials are seen on social media doing shooting practice or photographed with pistols and rifles, the executive is also promoting a law to “promote and facilitate” gun possession, among other measures that relax current controls. The Argentine Network for Disarmament has warned that the government’s rhetoric and decisions propose violence as a solution to conflicts and generate greater risks for people.

Argentine president Javier Milei has shaken up the command structure of the country’s Armed Forces. The ultra right-wing politician assigned the Air Force to head the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest executive body of the military. In addition, he introduced changes in the leadership of the Argentine Army, Navy, and Air Force. The most drastic modifications were made within the army, where Milei appointed Alberto Presti as Chief of the General Staff and automatically retired 22 generals. For analysts, Milei’s government is handing “a clear message of empowerment” to the military, which now also occupies important positions in the Ministry of Defense.
