Spanish authorities put number of active forest fires across the country with a high risk level at 16

The wave of wildfires continues to rage in Spain. Over the past week, 111,916 hectares have burned in 38 fires, according to estimates from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). The Spanish Ministry of the Interior has recorded 16 major fires with a high level of risk currently active in Spain, according to data from the National Emergency Monitoring and Coordination Center as of Friday morning. Four of these outbreaks are located in Galicia (A Mezquita, Chandrexa de Queixa, Maceda-Santiso and Oimbra, all in the province of Ourense), five in Castile and León (Gallegos del Río and Molezuelas de la Carballeda-Castrocalbón, in Zamora; Yeres-Puente de Domingo Flórez and Orallo-Villablino, in León; and in La Alberca, in the province of Salamanca), two in Extremadura (in Jarilla, Cáceres and in Llerena, Badajoz), one in Cangas del Narcea (Asturias) and another in Teresa de Cofrentes, in the province of Valencia.

Fires continue to rage in Spain, overwhelming authorities

Wildfires continued to rage across Spain on Wednesday, leaving thousands of hectares burned. After surrounding and controlling several blazes, the main focus was in the northwest of the country, specifically in the triangle formed by Ourense, León, and Zamora. Of the 10 main active fires identified by the Ministry of the Interior as of Wednesday afternoon, seven were in that area. Over 9,500 people in more than 50 municipalities in Castile and León had been forced to flee their homes due to the threat of the fire, which has now claimed three lives in Madrid and León and left several more injured, four in critical condition. In Extremadura, fire threatened the residents of Cabezabellosa (Cáceres), who refused to leave their homes, to the dismay of the regional authorities. “We are helpless and waiting,” complained the mayor of Alija del Infantado (León, population 573), José María Sánchez Córdoba, a member of the main opposition conservative Popular Party (PP), in the face of the threat of the fire spreading to a nearby pine forest and reaching the town.

Spain faces another day of battling wildfires across the country amid weather warnings

Spain faces another day of tackling multiple wildfires in several regions across the country, several of which remain out of control due to adverse weather conditions. Authorities are particularly concerned about those affecting the provinces of Ourense, Zamora, and León, in the northwest. However, there is also concern about active fires in Cáceres, Asturias, and Madrid. So far, the blazes have claimed two lives in Madrid and León: a 50-year-old man in Tres Cantos (Madrid) and a 35-year-old man who was volunteering to help extinguish the Molezuelas de la Carballeda fire (affecting the provinces of Zamora and León). Thousands of hectares have burned across the country, causing more than 5,000 people to spend Tuesday night evacuated from their homes.

‘Cow Covid’ threatens livestock ranches

The first case of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) in Europe was detected in November 2022. Since then, it has become a threat to cattle ranchers like Marcelo Mozo in Zamora (northwest Spain). This virus spreads via an insect that is not common in Spain. However, climate change and international animal shipments have facilitated the spread of these disease vectors. EHD does not affect people or meat, but it poses a critical threat for livestock as there is no vaccine available — infected cattle must be slaughtered. Farmers and experts compare EHD to Covid-19 due to its multifaceted impact on ruminants and the difficulty of preventing contagion. Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and regional government officials issued warnings about this risk after dozens of outbreaks and animal deaths were reported. To prevent the spread of EHD, animals and vehicles must be disinfected before they can move from affected areas to EHD-free areas.
